Judging by LSU's offense in the championship game, he should've been a candidate for the OC position

Lsu averaged 38 points a game in 2011 and blew the doors off every team not named Alabama.

I do worry that kragthorpe's condition Is going to hurt recruiting, and that he is paid too much for his QB coach title. 750,000+

Whoever was calling the plays on the 9th needs to get a clue.

I just grew up watching Michigan football, but I'd don't know anything about the program.

You'll see though. You'll hate him in two years. I assume this means back to pro set as well.

LSU's offense averaged 31.4 ppg in 2011.
35 rushing TDs
21 passing TDs
16 FGs

Good for 37th in the country.

Yeah great so as a fan that is your assessment. Trust me if you really knew what you speak of, you would be out recruiting players and not on a message board.

Many real experts of the game disagree with you. Thanks for playing though.

:Waiting for Auburn's thoughts:

Completely impressed as a QB coach. Malzahn was a "system" guy who plugged in QB's. Loeffler coaches QB's and has a great reputation doing so.

Now as an offensive coordinator? Totally unknown. Can't really have an opinion. I like his background with multiple offenses (pro-style in Michigan, spread under Urban Meyer, running offense at Temple), so his "philosophy" may be hard to pin down. But supposedly he's a football and tape-rat, so I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do.

Found references that he might have been under consideration by LSU last year (though didn't get a serious look) and that some Bama sites thought he might make a good replacement for McElwain, so he's not a total unknown.

Should be an exciting spring.

Is it about what the expectations were or were you guys hoping to bring in someone from NFL?

Everything I heard, I was definitely expecting an NFL guy.

The way it played out, I think Chizik was hoping for that NFL guy too. That obviously didn't work out.

Since that didn't work out, I'm OK with Loeffler. Have heard about him since early in the process and liked his background, though I thought his hiring was unlikely. I guess I was wrong.

LSU's points per game was by far the most misleading offensive stat of the 2011 season

LSU scored 42 points against UGA but barely had 200 yards of total offense. That tells me your defense was giving your offense short fields to work with.

The fact LSU was ranked 15th in points per game but 86th in yards per game solidifies what I'm saying.

You know how anemic AU's offense looked this year? LSU only averaged 15 more yards per game than AU.

So LSU might have put up points this year, but it sure as hell wasn't because the offense was moving the ball up and down the field on teams.

Loeffler is creative, but he doesn't develop QB's very well. I like his offense, but I'm not a big fan of his QB coaching. He did nothing for Tebow or Brantley as a coach.

Brian Griese, Tom Brady, Drew Henson, John Navarre, and Chad Henne disagree.

Maybe UF's problem was that Tebow's throwing style as a lefty can only be coached so far and that Brantley just sucked plain and simple?

Coached Tom Brady

He was a graduate assistant when Brady was at Michigan. He did not coach Tom Brady in anything but what time to get on the bus.

what is his claim to fame for a quarterback? Tebow had to completely rebuild his whole throwing mechanic to get drafted. Who else has he coached?

I don't really get this.

It wasn't Meyer or Loeffler's job to get Tebow ready for the NFL. It was their job to win football games at the University of Florida.

And obviously they coached Tebow well enough to be considered one of the greatest college football players of all time.

In Tebow's full three years as a starter, he threw for 8927 yards, completing 66% of his passes (639 of 962), for 83 passing TDs with 15 interceptions.

Seems to me that Meyer and Loeffler did a pretty good job with Tebow.

https://blog.pennlive.com/davidjones/2011/09/qb_guru_scot_loeffler_gives_ow.html

quote:

When they became friends back in the late '90s, Loeffler was a Michigan student assistant from the rustbelt area of northeast Ohio whose career had been cut short by a chronic shoulder injury. Brady was a camp mutt from California who idolized the analytical genius of Joe Montana and had used his savvy to vault more heralded Drew Henson into the U-of-M starting job.

Unable to play any longer, Loeffler was the young Brady's advocate to the coaching staff while he sat below Brian Griese on the Michigan depth chart.

They saw the game the same way. Carr remembers the two of them bonding over the <<REW/FF>> knob of a tape editing machine:

“They spent a lot of time watching film together. I think it just built up over time. Eventually it evolved into a great friendship.”

In a break from prep work for Saturday's game with Penn State at Lincoln Financial Field, Loeffler suggested on Thursday he and Brady are pretty much cognitive twins:

“We're very similar, to be honest. We think the same way. We love the position the same way. We love to study it. We are overachievers in every sense. And we hit it off from day 1 when he walked in as a true freshman."

Brady in many ways was Loeffler's first protege, his first pupil, even though he was only three years older.

“I was able to begin my coaching career with him,” said Loeffler. “It was a great experience; as much as I was able to give him, he gave to me.

He might turn out to be great. Who knows. All I am saying is that based purely on the hire today and what he has done in the past, the OC hire was underwhelming, and the DC hire was a huge success. I think it's pretty clear that Chizik missed on all of his top choices considering how long it took to make this hire happen.
