Saban's Final Leverage Shot is Now

He may go to Texas. He may not. I do not know. However, looking at this logically and from a negotiator's point of view, it has become clear to me that now is Saban's final opportunity to leverage whoever - Bama, Texas, etc - for more money.
The reasons:
1) He's 62. In 3 years he's not going to get a lot of teams chasing him (see Spurrier).
2) He doesn't want to go to the NFL and the NFL doesn't seem to want him. This means he can only use other college jobs as leverage.
3) There are only a select few college jobs that anyone with a triple digit IQ would expect him to take. No one thinks he jumps ship for WVU or Pitt. The jobs that have the cache to land Saban are:
USC - just hired coach. not able to use as leverage for 3+ years (see point #1)
Notre Dame - coach is on solid ground unless he leaves for NFL
This brings me to this moment:
Texas - the window is now. If Texas hires someone not named Saban then he won't be able to use that job as leverage for another 3+ years (again, see point #1). He has to realize that THIS moment is his maximum career leverage opportunity.
I don't know if he goes to Texas or stays at Bama, but I know why he's staying quiet on this. Pretty clear, actually.

I've been thinking this too. Good post. Additionally, if he stays at 'Bama, and gets some mega deal, Texas will feel like they've been played for fools. This has been so dramatic and drawn out that this might be the last time Sexton is able to play another team to get extra money for Saban. If he goes to Texas, then of course it will be the final stop for him, coaches rarely hop jobs at 65+ in any sport at collegiate or pro levels.

I saw the thread title and thought that there was BREAKING NEWS that had just occurred.
Of course this is his money shot due to his age and the circumstances with Texas. In the future, if he stays at Bama, he will have other opportunities based on performance to increase his pay, as well as his legacy.
His legacy/reputation could take another negative hit if he were to move on...one that would be tougher to rehabilitate, given his age.

Pretty much agree.
I do think Saban is seriously considering taking the Texas job and has not made up his mind yet. I think Texas has been talking to Sexton and Sexton has told them Saban is interested but they need to get rid of Mack before he will have a direct conversation with them and make a decision.
So, Mack is being let go to clear the deck so all cards on on the table and direct talks take place then Saban will decide. Bama's position is pretty simple. They have made their offer and will up it SOME if need be. Now the ball is in the court of saban and texas to do their thing and tell bama how it is going to go.

I actually see Saban as a better fit at Notre dame than anywhere else. I would have figured that would always be his swan song gig.
