Ryan Day to the Indianapolis Colts?

His name seems to come up a lot during recent NFL coaching searches. Is this the year he takes the leap? Feel like a young innovative coach like Ryan Day would be a good fit for Indy.

He's probably happy being 11-1/12-0 in the weak arse big ten every year

I’m hearing it’s imminent

He’d be dumb to do that

That would be stupid. Ohio State has been close to having a roster good enough to win a national championship. He should get one or two of those first.

Is he a young innovative coach these days or does he have more talent than 99% of college football?

He obviously has an enormous talent advantage in the dogshit Big 10, but he is still one of the best coaches in the game

He’s a good offensive mind and has coached some good QBs there. Also has been in the nfl before. Always a big jump tho

I could see him becoming interested if he loses to Michigan again. That fanbase will start going nuts if he loses back to back years

How many college head coaches met with success after taking a head coaching job with the NFL?
Analytically speaking, a risky move for the Colts.

Certainly he's a good coach, I hope my comment doesn't come off that he's not. Virtually every college program in the country outside of Georgia and Bama would be ecstatic if he was interested in coaching their program.
I know you know this, but NFL rosters are built entirely different -- namely they don't get their pick of the litter when it comes to talented players like college coaches, namely Day, do. That would be a bit concerning for me as an Indy GM. We haven't seen him build a program but we have seen him maintain OSU which sometimes can be just as hard so he has that going for him.

Quick internet search says Indianapolis pays their head coach $4.5 million per year, which is what Day makes now.
Why move to the NFL? NFL is a longer season. More travel. More work. For a shot at a Super Bowl? NFL more prestigious? I get why coordinators make the move, but why would a head coach at a top school?

Colts head coach makes 9 mil, Day makes 9.5.
NFL is the highest level. For some coaches that is their end all goal and/or like Saban want to see if they have what it takes to be successful at the next level.

Have you watched Alabama this year?

CFB is more work. there's no true off-season. recruiting is a 24/7 ordeal, and you gotta always travel and stay in contact with your targets. you have to evaluate and travel to FB players in 8th and 9th grade
now, with the portal and NIL, you have to re-recruit your own players every year, and try to convince your boosters to pay more money to the school's collective to attract the top kids who are looking to get lucrative deals

Not a lot but I know Alabama has been to the playoffs 7 out of the 8 years it's been around. 247 started grading overall talent and not just recruiting classes in 2015. Since then, Bama has made the playoffs 6 times and had the most talented team in 4 of those years. The other two years they had the 2nd most talented roster .
Obviously no one is questioning Saban as a coach but it helps when he consistently has the best players in the country. Same for Day, he's not going to be able to stockpile talent in the NFL like he and Saban have done in college.
It's not a knock on the coach to have great players, hell recruiting talent is one of his biggest responsibilities. And it doesn't mean Day isn't a good coach schematically, but it does lend credence to the concern that he's never had to win with mediocre or less talent than his peers which is certainly the situation he'd be stepping into in Indy.

Don’t have to deal with fricking kids. Huge draw.
