If AU actually has or does hire him, I hope they give him full control and get the frick out of his way. I want to get back to AU football, not the crap we have seen since 08. I miss having a stable of elite running backs and a hard hitting tough defense.

If this is true, then It will effect Georgia's and Alabama's recruiting base, especially on defense.

Last thing we both need is another school with a 3-4 defense and the recruiting prowess of CKS

To be honest I've been thinking the past few weeks that Bama's rise back to dominance is partly AU's fault. Bama was on the canvas before Saban was hired. After he showed up, Tubs basically quit recruiting and then shelved what had been AU's identity forever. Tub's last 2 years gave Saban incredible momentum on the recruiting trail and a 36-0 arse kicking was the culmination of scrapping our offensive identity and switching to the spread. Personally I think Tubs switched to the spread because he didn't want to go head to head with Saban for the same players. Now Bama is just a runaway train

Auburn definitely deserves tons of credit for everything Bama has accomplished.

If this is true, I wonder if he would run a 3-4 or stick to the 4-3. This could affect guys like Carl Lawson or Dee Liner in our recruiting class.

Doubt it. Dee has been close to flipping to Bama and Lawson's #2 team was Tennessee before he committed. Both of those teams run a 3-4

I would worry more about whether or not he is going to liquidate the entire staff (which I hope happens regardless of who is hired) before I worried about what defense he is going to run.

Well Liner could play end in a 3-4 or DT in a 4-3. If we got Smart, we should be able to hang on to him either way. I wonder what we would do with Lawson though. Was UT recruiting him as DE or rush LB?

Jack LB. Lawson would be a terror at that position

Thats a good point.

Muschamp is a perfect comparison.

Muschamp was a proven dc without Saban though. Not saying that Smart is garbage without him of course.

Phillip Marshall posted that there's "not a shred of truth" in the rantsports rumor article.

Not sweating it honestly, would be a good hire for Auburn imo but I think we'd be fine. It's Saban's defense.

I'd be happy for him and support. And yeah, we'd be fine without him. Two things I wouldn't like 1) Most importantly, we would lose him in all likelihood for the BCSNC. and 2) It means he will never be Alabama's head coach

Auburn has been planning on hiring Petrino the whole time. They just needed a way to get him in there with the least amount of AU fan bitching. Throwing out a bogus rumor saying Smart has been offered a multi-year deal for $20M, most AU fans who opposed him will now welcome him with open arms, or at least take a wait and see attitude. AU Admin has to TRY and find a way to keep Saban from running a 10 year win streak on AU. They're going to have to gamble on Petrino, a guy who has taken 2 different teams to BCS Bowls. The media & rival fans jumped down Bama's throat for hiring Saban for all that $$$, jumped on Saban for leaving Miami the way he did. You don't hear any of that any more, and Mal Moore looks like a genius.

Same thing when he left MSU for LSU. Most of the fans were "We're paying how much?"
