Apparently they don’t run the spread in DIV II and no one in the Big 12 ran it when he was at Nebraska.

Youngstown St is FCS, not D2. And he’s been a Head Coach since 2008. That IS NOT the same as facing modern spread teams as a DC and being directly responsible for game prep and practice. That unknown is a legitimate concern that we wouldn’t face hiring someone who is currently a DC.

This is not a knock on Bo’s coaching ability or his previous contributions here. He might re-adjust to the current P5 game quickly and smoothly, but you drum beaters do not know that for certain. No one can.

What was the score in our 2 losses

I think we only gave up 20+ points in regulation. Those extra scores were in triple overtime. How many did Aranda give up to A&M in 2018?

I’ve seen people question whether or not he can adjust to the spread. Which is a reasonable question. I haven’t seen any flat out say that he can’t though. I don’t put it past the rant though.

there was a time when the rant wanted to hire Cam Cameron as head coach to to replace Coach O.

What’s wrong with you?

Nearly five full seasons in, Pelini is 32-27 in Youngstown with one FCS playoff appearance and no Missouri Valley Football Conference titles.

Oh yeah, he’s so good.... NOT!!!

This doesn’t mean he can’t be a good DC again. But with a guy like Boom, we at least saw him turn a pretty weak Auburn defense around quickly in a season and lay the groundwork for Steele to build on just 5 years ago. The primary knock on Bo being a DC is just that he hasn’t done it in a long time.

IF Pelini is hired as DC, on the surface I hate the hire just like I hated the coach O HC hire.

BUT

Coach O has proven himself to be a NC coach and me wrong so if he says Pelini is the man:

Then I’m all in!!!

"Modern Offenses" - game is still won in the trenches with some running game.
If Burrow was getting heat and the OL allowed 5 sacks every game, that "modern" offense does not work. If CEH did not gain all those tough yards, that "modern" offense does not work.
Defense needs to bring the heat and control the line of scrimmage - that will stop a "modern offense".

I agree 100%. It don't matter how pretty you dress it up. If your bigs whip my bigs and you close the windows in the secondary my day will be long and miserable. That's football 101.

How many did he give up to fricking Arkansas and Kentucky?

Umm...less than Aranda did in 2018 against A&M?

Not sure what singling out those two games does for your argument.

lol LSU won a NC his last year in Baton Rouge.

With the 17th ranked defense that gave up averages of 19 points per game, 106 rushing yards, and 180 passing yards per game.

And he was directly responsible for LSU almost blowing their shot at that national championship.

8-5 (6-1 at the time) 2007 Kentucky stats (in regulation) in Lexington:

333 total yards
212 passing with 2 TDs (all woodson)
121 rushing with 1 TD

8-5 2007 Arkansas stats (in regulation) in tiger stadium:

428 total yards
100 passing with 1 TD (thrown by McFadden)
328 rushing yards with 3 TDs
McFadden: 180 rushing yards, 29 passing yards, 3 total TDs
Hillis 84 rushing yards, 1 TD
Jones 59 rushing yards

If not for being the year of absolute chaos, we play Hawaii in the sugar bowl because his defense shite the bed against barely bowl eligible teams.

The game that had 4 more overtimes than the other 2? More overtimes than both combined? That would be a dumb comparison to make.

Regulation stats are a more legit comparison:

364 total yards
150 rushing yards with 2 TDs
214 passing yards with 2 TDs

So 31 more total yards than the Kentucky game with 4 more points in regulation. 64 fewer yards than the Arkansas game with 3 more points in regulation.

That’s what concerns me. We started giving up lots of yardage & points to teams running spread concepts. I specifically remember Danielson saying during a broadcast that an unnamed OC told him they “think they see a flaw” in Bo’s defense that makes it vulnerable to the spread. I think this was when Ole Miss was giving us a game. No telling if he’s adapted since then, but it was certainly true at the time.

No, it's not a dumb comparison to make. I was pointing that it is ignorant to point to one or two games compared to an entire body of work to judge the effectiveness of a defense.

You just argued that Pelini's 2007 Kentucky and Arkansas games were equivalent to Aranda's 2018 A&M game.

We all believe Aranda is an elite DC. We know that at one time Pelini was an effective, possibly elite, DC. Is he still one? You can't answer that question focusing on two games in 2007.

I'm actually starting to think it is someone else.

The reason those games come up repeatedly is because those two offenses are closer to whet we face today than the pro-style teams we dominated that season. Same with Ole Miss that year. Even though we won, they did give our defense fits that season.

The other thing that comes up repeatedly is Bo’s penchant for using bigger safeties as Nickel and Dime backs, which became a problem when we played teams with more speed at the skill positions. Maybe Bo has changed with the times and won’t do this anymore, but since he hasn’t run a defense in 13 years, we have no way of knowing that for sure.
