For those that follow ULL, what are your impressions? He is getting a lot of mentions for the Oregon DC spot.

He’s phenomenal. Always had the guys in the right spots and very fundamentally sound defense. I’ve been very impressed.

This is an open board talking about all coaching changes.

If Toney is being talked about for Oregon, then the discussion belongs on this board.

Thanks.

I hope y’all don’t take him but I’m surprised it’s taken this long for his name to arise. Young guy, from the Ron Roberts tree. He’s the DC/safeties coach and our safeties were very obviously coached well. Good at halftime adjustments, there was only maybe one game where I didn’t think he outschemed the opposing offensive coordinator.

Yep. Napier says he’s a rising star as a DC (hopefully he sticks around with Napier 1 more year)

Scheme wise he runs a similar scheme to Aranda, Golding and Roberts

I could not care any less about their fan base, but you have to give respect to how Napier has run that program.

This is a LA centric board. I would think some people might know a thing or two about him.

Toney actually happens to be from SoCal and runs a defensive scheme that fits Oregon.

Sounds like he’d be a good hire.

He’s a great coach. Learned under Roberts and Golding at SLU. He has risen pretty fast, he is a star in the making. He knows the game in and out, he will not be at ULL much longer. Only thing holding him back, is some might think he’s young. Side note, one of the key threads that ties lot of these guys together, Golding, Roberts, Aranda, Toney, Karl Scott( Bama dB coach) is Bill Williams. Coaching guru that lots of these guys have learned under, he coaches the coaches.

Agree. The way our team, especially on defense, came out in the 3rd quarter this season was impressive. We trailed at halftime five times this season, and tied twice. Ended up 6-1 in those seven games.

I honestly can't remember seeing a Cajuns defensive staff show such obviously improvements from first half to the second throughout the entire season. It seems in the past we were just hanging on for dear life hoping our offense can just keep scoring.

Was thinking about how the biggest name from the Ron Roberts tree is Dave Aranda, who Roberts now coaches under.

Can't say I watched any ULL games, but Toney was an awesome DB coach, and good guy all around, at SLU. We had some solid defenses, and put some players into the NFL (practice squads mostly) from the secondary during his time there.

Toney is an excellent coach and would be a great hire. I've always thought he would stay with ULL and make a move next offseason. I know his end goal is to be an NFL DC.

I do wonder if he’s just a bit too inexperienced as a play caller to be a take. He probably needs one more season to parlay his success to a bigger program.
