I just wanted to chime in on my thoughts about Kragthorpe, as a UofL fan and bystander of the tumultuous three years that were Krags-led Louisville football.

First, the things being said on this board about the Petrino era being laced with thugs and criminals are about as weak as most arguments can get. We had two players arrested when Petrino left (WR JuJuan Spillman [driving under the influence] and CB Rod Council […armed robbery…]). Now yes, the armed robbery is in the upper echelon of series crimes, no question. However, to make it sound like Petrino was running an Urban Meyer-esque parade of criminals like Florida has been in the past few years is utterly ridiculous. The turnover that our program saw was not because of off the field issues, but because players didn’t want to play for Kragthorpe, so they transferred (see: Anthony Allen, Latarrius Thomas)

There was hardly a mess for Kragthorpe to clean up, on or off the field. He returned pretty much the ENTIRE offense from an Orange Bowl championship (sans two RB’s: Michael Bush and Kolby Smith) and lost only two starters on defense (DT Amobi Okoye and CB William Gay). It’s not like the guy had to start from scratch. Kragthorpe’s first problem was that he didn’t get to pick his staff from the beginning. Some holdovers from Petrino’s staff stayed and in retrospect, our AD Tom Jurch should’ve let him pick his staff. However, it’s still no excuse for how dismal things got.

Our first year offense was pretty close to what it was from Petrino’s tenure, if slightly less than that, but it wasn’t thanks to Kragthorpe. Former QB coach under Petrino, Jeff Brohm, was the OC/QB coach/”Passing game Coordinator” during his tenure here. After the first year of Krags reign, Kragthorpe took a more hands on approach to our offense…and then it proceeded to sputter out of control. Brohm was still the OC in 2008, but he had to run his plays through Kragthorpe who, during an interview with our local newspaper, changed the plays the vast majority of the time in 2008. After that season, Brohm left for FAU to rejoin his former coach Howard Schnellenberger. Then, the offense completely faltered with Kragthorpe at the helm. When it was under his command, we barely put up 13 points a game in the 2009 season, his final one with Louisville.

He was a bad hire for us from the jump, but we also got to see that he was a bad coach as well. He didn’t recruit locally and shunned a lot of major talent that went elsewhere. All we heard when he was named our coach in 2007 was heaps of praise from everywhere. NFL, NCAA, former players under him, etc. But he just wasn’t a good fit. He was a complete opposite coach from Petrino in every way: He was not an in your face coach like BP, he did not recruit from the same area as Louisville has always recruited (KY, FL, OH, GA) and he was just not as good of a coach as Petrino.

I do wish you guys luck at LSU. No ill-will on our end, as long as you keep beating Kentucky. I just don’t think it’s going to happen with Steve Kragthorpe on your coaching staff.
