With the way their last two coaching searches went is anyone suprised?

I was honestly having a hard time understanding all the talk coming from UT fans. They were talking Gruden and home run hires. I know they hated Butch at the end, but he was like the only person that would take the job last time around.

I remember there being threads titled Check in if you have turned down UT.

No disrespect, but UT is about on par with us at this point. It's a smaller state with a small recruiting base. Yes it is better than ours especially with nearby states, but UT has about the same draw as we do. They are not Big 6 and a national team anymore. Add in the fan expectations....

I really think the fact we have lower expectations is why we have done better with our last few hires. (ETA: Coach B looked good on paper)

I think the days of UT being a powerhouse are over for a while.

The golden age for Tennessee died when LSU upset fat Fulmers and his chances at another NC in 2001. This was the beginning of the Nick Saban era. Yes Saban killed the Vols dynasty.

It's interesting to see how programs with a strong history, but no particular inherent advantages, fare in the new world of money and media.

Nebraska and Tennessee are two easy examples. Oklahoma is still close enough to (and intertwined with) Texas to reap benefits.

Good job by the Tennessee fans...Regardless of Schiano's past I wouldn't have wanted him as my HC no matter what, if I was a Vols fan.

Thats a good point. I was actually thinking of Nebraska when I typed this out.

Also, Fulmer having the success he did in the 90's is close enough time wise to keep the fan expectations unreasonable for todays landscape.

While I wouldn't want him either, the fact the UT search was zero'd in on him to begin with speaks volumes.

When I heard about him I was like where in sams hell did his name come from.
