A guess...and ONLY a guess. IF he is interested in leaving, it would be to get the credit / control for the defense and move to the "next level". I suspect he MIGHT suffer from the "yeah, but it is PC's D" syndrome.

USC has Sarkisian, Kiffin, Holt and O who went on to become head coaches.

LSU has Pelini and Dooley who became head coaches and Muschamp and Fisher who are head coaches in waiting.

He can become a head coach just as easily if not much more easily at USC. I can't see why Holt would want to come to LSU except to shed the "Pete Carrol really runs the defense tag", a la Will Muschamp.

Idaho

Following the 2003 season, Holt was hired as the head coach at Idaho; the Vandals went 3-9 in 2004 and 2-9 in 2005.

When former Idaho quarterback and alumnus Scott Linehan became head coach of the NFL's St. Louis Rams, he offered Holt a position as his defensive line coach. Deciding to make a move before his children entered high school, Holt resigned from Idaho on February 6, 2006 to take a position with the Rams. After hearing the news, Carroll offered his former assistant more money and the position of defensive coordinator; and a day after resigning he declined the new position (he had not signed a contract) to return to USC, taking over defensive coordinator responsibilities from head coach Pete Carroll.[2]

a past failure does not equal a future failure...

it just makes the hiring more risky.

Lincoln.....
Was defeated in becoming the speaker of the state legislature.
Was defeated in becoming elector.
Was defeated for Congress
Was defeated for Congress.
Was defeated for Congress again.
Was rejected for the job of Land Officer in his home state.
Was defeated for Senate
Was defeated for Vice-President
Was defeated for Senate for the third time.
then
Was elected President of the United States.

Everyone learns from mistakes.......
now the question is ?

Was one failure in Iowa St.
all he needed to succeed again ?

Time will tell.

What a stupid thread. Why would a guy who coached the #1 Defense this year, leave to go be the DC somewhere else? Just could not be further from the truth
