I remember when UW first hired him, all of the fans were really excited. Then the USC fans stopped by and told everyone that he was just Pete Carroll's puppet and it was really Carroll that was calling the defenses. Turns out they were right. Holt didn't have a clue what he was doing.

Then this sounds like a whole lotta fail by Sarkisian. How would he not know any of this?

He was hiring people he was familiar with? Holt was the head coach at Idaho for two years, before Carroll brought him back to Southern Cal as DC, at least in name. Regardless, his recruiting abilities probably got him the DC job in Seattle more than anything.

Does the next guy have to have SEATAC and/or Coast ties?

I'm in the thought you get best available no matter who it is.

Not necessarily, but that's what typically happens. Without doing much research, my choice would be Jim Heacock. He's been the Ohio State defensive coordinator since 2005. He's coached at UW before, so he does have ties to the University and Urban Meyer isn't keeping him around.

Holt hasn't been a good recruiter either. I can't really think of any recruits saying that he's the reason they chose UW. Our best recruiter was poached by Jim Mora and UCLA, and our 2nd best recruiter was the only guy retained on the defensive side of the ball. But I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave either.

Hindsight says that Sark should have realized who had control at USC and not hire Holt. Turns out he was a terrible hire. Worst defense in school history this year.
