ND beat reporter for the SOUTH BEND TRIBUNE Eric Hansen reports that Bob Stoops is indeed the top choice of Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick for the Irish football coach job.

Hansen notes the possibilities “He’s Irish. He’s Catholic. He’s Midwestern. … There are rumors that Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione, with whom Stoops has a strong relationship, may be in the mix at Michigan. Breaking in a new AD may not be all that appealing to Stoops. Stoops’ twin boys and daughters love Norman, Okla., and have passed the age when moving is no big deal.”

Hansen’s only negative: “Wife Carol is a powerhouse in the cosmetics business for Mary Kay.”

Apparently Hansen hasn’t seen the women of South Bend (My father, brother and cousin all went there, I know.)

Recently, the CHICAGO TRIBUNE floated the possibility that Notre Dame is interested in Stoops, and here was the coach’s response:

“There’s nothing to talk about. Notre Dame has a coach and I’ve got a great job and you know, people just make stuff up. I don’t need to comment on that. If there’s some basis to anything I’d gladly comment on it, but just some guy makes something up, I don’t need to comment on that stuff.”

That rhetoric should alarm OU fans. Far from a denial.

Hansen has four other candidates, and Brian Kelly isn’t as prominent on Swarbrick’s list as you might think.

I can't say for sure. I'm guessing this was said in passing, but I can't understand how he stays unless it's a money issue.

I don't want to be negative or ever insinuate an LSU loss to Arky is good but, if the embarrassing loss did happen and things occurred soon after, I think LSU is put in a relatively-speaking good position to make a change.

If Kelly goes to ND, I don't see LSU finding the right guy. If Stoops does, it opens the doors for LSU to really entertain the major change idea with BK, just my opinion.

I'm sure it will not happen, but I think serious discussion will occur.

ND is smart for going after a proven coach. They are following the bama model for buying a known quantity rather that who "might work". Hope LSU can do the same should they be in the HC market. This is a coaching arms race....I hope we will attempt to keep up.

If Stoops doesn't go this year to ND and LSU find itself in the market for a HC I hope we at least gage the interest on Bob Stoops.

okay, but I think you are overestimating the LSU HC Position.

Unless there is some mutual parting ways issue at OU, the LSU position shouldn't even be in the discussion.

There are only a couple of jobs you leave OU for. LSU isn't one of them.

The only jobs, imo, you leave OU for are ND, Michigan, PSU, and OSU. They have the history to make it seem plausible. No one else comes close.

well overall might be a few different ones depending on the coach, but I think stoop's would only leave for those jobs. for others you could put, uf, usc and texas on the list.

Stoops in from the midwest and I believe the only jobs he would leave ND for would be ohio state and ND. Same with Urban, the sticking point will be the entrance requirements and the question of will ND relax them for a certain number of recruits a year. This is why CUM didnt go last time.

Bob Stoops is not leaving OU for LSU -- I'm a life-long Tiger, but that is a step down. Secondly, Jack Del Rio is the ideal LSU candidate this or next year IF Miles is forced out.

I wouldn't say that. It's just a lateral move.
