Saban recruited players who could play in the NFL, not who could play at LSU. That's a big difference. Plus he realized the program was a sleeping giant, and was losing in state recruits to Tennessee, Florida for example

They had the one down year when Tressel resigned, but he left them in great shape. Meyer stepped right in and went 12-0 his first year.
But Tressel isn't an apt comparison to Napier in any respect.

I like Napier and would happy with him. But we are not hiring a coach to get one recruit,

You don’t hire a sun-belt coach to take over a top 10 program. He is to much of a gamble since he has NEVER been a head coach at a power 5 program. I am sure he is a good coach just not for LSU.

Completely agree with the OP. I’ve said this before about Tressel in relation to Napier. Also, he actually had 3 NC appearances in 10 years not 2. ‘02 ‘06 ‘07

So, give you my perspective first. As an Aggie, I watched 2 major sports hires under Woody. First, Jimbo for FB. 2nd, as he was departing, Buzz Williams fo MBB. Now, I don't know what part he had in Buzz's hire. My suspicion is that he raised the $ and turned it over to asst ADs.
There were no leaks in either hires until it became clear.
We all speculated like you are doing. Nobody knew shite.

Exactly, the comparison is stupid. How about we wait and see if Napier can win the Sun Belt before we hire him in the SEC? fricking Coastal Carolina has a better Sun Belt Coach, for fricks sake.

Woodward who swings for the fences isn't hiring someone as green as Napier unless he strikes out on a whole host of far more qualified candidates.
