Who also happen to be great recruiters. Present and recent past.
And guys like Saban, Carroll, Stoops who were de facto DC's do not count.

Brent Venables
Jesse Minter
Will Muschamp
Jeremy Pruitt
They are definitely out there - Are you insinuating we should just focus on a good DC then surround with recruiters because a person with both skillsets is tough to find?

Jimmy Lake was a good one. I don't know the particulars of his contract situation when he left Washington though.

I’d take a stud dc that isn’t big on recruiting, like Aranda, you place the recruiters around him.

Or you could have Matt House, who does nothing well.

Indeed house can’t recruit worth a frick and his scheme sucks dick.
The weird thing is last year he made good adjustments. This year nothing at all.

Kirby Paul Smart, hands down.

Pruitt. Great recruiter and DC. He was arguably the best DC under Saban (yes, better than Kirby too).

It's evident how rare it is to find someone who can do both. Some 6 guys in the last 20 years - count all the DC's who've been out there in that span.

Yes. When Pelini v1.0, Chief and Aranda had good defenses the constant complaint was they were horrible recruiters. Yet we could field defenses that carried the team despite Les' offense.
A good DC who has good schemes/ is a good coach/ in-game adjustments/ utilizes talent to the max is a rare breed. Find such a guy and surround him with the best recruiters along with an increase in recruiting budget/NIL spending to compete with the top dogs and we have a winner.
There is no reason we have to settle for a position coach from the NFL who has piss poor schemes and is a horrible recruiter.
