My notre dame friend comments

I have a friend here in Louisiana who is a die hard notre dame fan. He went there, his kids went there, and one got a law degree from there. Not sure how we maintain our friendship since he’s way smarter than me and had much higher educational standards.
Anyway, he’s pretty ticked about Kelly. He says it’s very widely felt that Kelly would have been there for the next 10 years if he wanted. Generally, All they really wanted was decent football. They got that and more.
They loved Kelly and the fact that he had them in contention every year was icing on the cake.
So he says that they all believe that Kelly wanted a championship and believed he was never going to win it at ND. The writing was on the wall with the SEC getting stronger and ND being independent was working against them. This was the time to get out.
Anyway, he feels like his wife just left him for a rich dude in a rolls Royce but still believes that ND had a chance if they hire the right guy. They all want Fickell.
Kelly is a solid hire.

When was the last ND HC to leave who wasn't fired or retired?
