looks like we are about to hire another insurance salesman to be the single year sacrificial lamb a la Gary Darnell.

that sounds about right actually.
I seriously doubt any up and coming guy is going to come in when the buzzards are circling Sherman.
The best we are going to get is somebody who is a massive reach and likely puppet for Sherman or a person desperate to get back into football due to his own personal and/or professional failings.
Hell, I wouldn't be shocked if he simply promotes QB coach Tom Rossley to the position since he held the same post under Sherman at Green Bay.

I'm not sure this is even in Byrne's hands. This smells like some big time donors are interfering.
Sherman was hired and given a 7 year (!!!) deal just 3 days after Franchione "resigned" and was the only coach interviewed in what was called a "nation wide" search.
I find it hard to believe $Bill has done so well hiring coaches for other sports but then picked Sherman in such a ridiculous way.

I gotta agree with you there. I don't see how it was possible that Sherman was hired so quickly after Fran was canned when Byrne has made some rediculously great hires in other sports during his tenure. The whole situation reeks of insider big money donors.
That being said the new smoke is that we'll keep him for at least one year if not two provided he hire an OC and make head coaching his main priority. While I truly think Sherman is a sub-par coach I can agree with keeping him for at least a year. We've got a great recruiting class coming in next year that we could get some development and seeding out of. Hell Trey Williams was just upgraded to five star.
My question is who would be a good hire for OC?

Those stats really put things in perspective when it comes to Sherman. I was willing to give him a pass up until last year, but when you build expectations and return so many starters, you cannot backslide, and Sherman did in spectacular fashion. If he was going to "turn the corner," 2011 was THE year to get it done.

I wouldn't fire him without having a better guy sitting in the wings ready to sign. Too many vacancies out there this year and it might be easier to figure out why they lost the second half leads and fix that. Wait until next year to get a new coach if he doesn't fix it.

He needs to go but unless we get a big time coach like Kirby Smart, Chris Peterson, etc, not sure we would be trading up either..you'd think a 50K enrollment Tier one Texas university that loves football could do better...
