Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak has been targeted for the job of Penn State head coach by a search panel tasked with finding a successor to fired Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Tuesday.

According to the newspaper's anonymous sources, Munchak and Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Tom Clements are the leading candidates to replace Paterno, but Munchak is the top choice.

Munchak, who was an NFL Hall of Fame offensive lineman for the-then Houston Oilers and played on Paterno's offensive line from 1978-81, "would be a great fit" in State College, according to former PSU tailback Curt Warner.

"He's a Penn State guy," Warner told the paper. "I don't think any of his old teammates would be upset about him getting the job at all. He has my support. I'd love to see him get it."

Munchak, 51, was hired as the Titans franchise's 16th head coach in February, his first head coaching job after 14 seasons coaching Tennessee's offensive line. Before that, he started at the entry-level position as quality control assistant with the offensive staff through 1996.

Paterno was fired in November in the aftermath of child sex-abuse charges against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, who maintains his innocence. Paterno is not a target of the investigation.

I told you guys that the reason why Penn State was taking so long is because they're waiting for Munchak. I don't understand how anybody could think that Penn State is taking this long to wait for a college coach. Unless Penn State's intended target is Miles or Saban who is playing for the national championship (and that is very unlikely), there's no logical reason for Penn State or the college coach they want to hire to drag this process out this long.

I assume he can coach. But, he has been involved in the pro game for 30+ years. Does he even have a clue how to recruit (or even know the rules)? I don't see this going very well.

I can't see him leaving the Titans where's he has been for 30 years to "go take care of momma."

Munch isn't leaving.

"I have a great deal of respect for Penn St and I hope they find a great coach there," Munchak said. "But I am happy where I’m at. I love my alma mater, but I have no interest in being the head coach at Penn State. I never want to leave Tennessee. "It is not like I’m saying I want nothing to do with Penn State My point is I have no interest in being the head coach there," Munchak said. "Hopefully this will be the end of all the speculation. Most of it never comes true anyway."

Yeah, no idea why he'd leave a decent NFL gig for the mess that is Penn State. He's done a pretty good job, too.

I don't know why you would want to hire a coach that has never coached at the college level. I know they'll more than likely have to hire a Penn State grad, but at least go with someone with college experience. That being said, Munchak isn't leaving the only team he's ever worked for. Especially for a gigantic public relations job that will be Penn State.

It's not almost like. Penn State fans believe that a top flight D1 football coach is going to leave thier current job to go there.
