Saban had his share of 6 win seasons at Michigan State and that's about where Tucker will land this year

As far as a Big 10 version of a "buzzsaw", Michigan State ran into it this year taking on Minnesota and Maryland and Washington, all when those three are doing the best work they've done in over a decade, maybe two decades

plus losses to Ohio State and (ETA), not a total blowout versus Michigan

I imagine Wisconsin even asks Tucker to interview this month

we're calling 29-7 a close loss? a game where michigan state didn't score after the first quarter? did you even watch the game?

Sorry I posted the rough draft. It wasn't a blowout, I knew when I posted. Ohio State loss was kind of a blowout.

I'll edit so that your feelings can begin to heal.

Petersen had Washington rolling up double digit wins. They made the playoffs a few years ago.

Minnesota finished ranked in the top 10 just three years ago.

Maryland… You might be on to something. It’s been over a decade since they’ve won more than 7 games.

Tough crowd - and DeBoar has continued the success, it's a tough game to win

with the same coach they have now, that's the point

Minnesota is not an easy win

I laugh every time thinking about that contract Michigan State gave him. He got to have a picture of Kenneth Walker hanging up in his house somewhere.

Mid-90's Michigan State is not the same as 2020's Michigan State.

In the 15 years preceding Nick Saban's tenure, Michigan State averaged less than 6 wins a year, including an 0-11 season in 1994. They had 2 conference titles and a 3-4 record in bowls. Highest final ranking = 8th.

In the 15 years preceding Mel Tucker? 122 wins (average of 8 wins a year), 12 bowl appearances (including a CFP appearance and 2 other NY6/BCS games), and finished in the top 6 three times.

It may not seem like a drastic difference, but they've really been on a decline since 2018...last year seems more like an aberration than an uptick.

good points, but Saban was still 6-6 in year 4

Tucker was 11-2 in year 2

ETA: Tucker was an NFL DC for 7 years, and an interim head coach for 5 games, and some guy in this thread was LOL'ing about him getting an interview at Wisconsin

Michigan State was one of the luckiest teams in CFB a season ago. Caught up pretty quickly this go-around.

0-11 season in 1994

They actually went 5-6 on the field, but vacated all 5 wins. But they did lose to Kansas so yeah might as well have gone winless

Only winning season in his coaching career, 13-17 in conference games (Pac-12 & Big Ten)

this certainly seems plausible to me. not only is Tucker is a Wisconsin alum, he checks the diversity/inclusion box for UW.

There are MSU fans on r/collegefootball that were trying to troll me that they got the better coach between Mel and Kelly. Each time MSU loses I go back to that post and post some troll. 6 in a row right now lol

There’s no way they give him a raise from that ridiculous contract.

If they are going to pay someone $10 million a year it sure as hell better not be Mel Tucker
