I'd rather see someone with HC experience that you know can manage a program. I'd rather not take that risk on a coordinator right now. Just my opinion though.
As far as MacIntyre he recruited well at Ole Miss and Duke. Well enough to have some very solid defenses while there. He's been in the NFL with the Cowboys (under Parcells) and the Jets. He was tabbed as FBS Asst. COY in 2009 at Duke. And he's had a ranked team this season at San Jose State.
It really would be a pretty good hire if you're being realistic about our options.

I am very realistic. Stoops is a realistic option and I'd rather have him.
