On Nick Saban, a person close to the Alabama athletic department tells me that the Bama higher-ups are pretty much resigned to the fact that Nick Saban is Texas bound. Look for the total compensation package combined with a new challenge and a change of scenery for both Nick and Terry being the deciding factors that carry the day.

Red McCombs attended today's Alamo Bowl press conference and took a few questions afterward on Mack Brown and even Nick Saban:

Q: On the speculation that Mack Brown is close to announcing his resignation/retirement:

MCCOMBS: To be bounced around in the public as to whether you're going to keep your job or not can be dispiriting, especially to your friends and family. But in sports it takes on a special meaning, because sports teams belong to the fans. They expect that. That's what makes it work.

So it does get personal. No way around that. But I think Mack has earned the right to choose whatever he wants to do - whether he wants to stay or go. When you look back and see where Texas was when he came and where it is today, it's the most envied program in sports.

If you find a reason to get rid of a guy like that you'd really have to reach.

Q: How is Mack holding up?

MCCOMBS: These things are always rougher on the family than they are on you. But if you're in sports, you have to buy into this because the media plays such a huge part in the success of any program.

So you are a focus of the media if you're in sports, and the higher up the ladder you go, the more you are going to be identified.

Q: Do you think Mack Brown's job status has been handled poorly by the university.

MCCOMBS: You can't stop the speculation. You can say anything you want, but the media doesn't believe most of what you say anyway. You're going to get both sides.

So you can't really say anything to stop the speculation, and, frankly, I don't know that you would want to stop the speculation. This is a part of sports. People in communities, their support of the sports is what makes it all work.

Their support comes from a lot of media input. They want to know everything that happens; everything that didn't happen; everything that could happen. And that makes it work.

Q: Obviously, the results the last four years are not what Mack Brown or Texas would have wanted.

MCCOMBS: Not just the results, but the preparation. You're going into a season with just two quarterbacks, and one of them is a half-gimp?

You're depending on a lot of luck there. So I think there are a lot of ways to criticize Mack's program if you take an issue here and an issue there.

But if you look at the body of work, who else has done what he's done? It's hard to get to the top, but it's even harder to stay at the top. And there are some holes in his program. That's why he's got those losses.

Q: If there is a coaching change, a lot of speculation has focused on Nick Saban. Have you ever met him?

MCCOMBS: I have not met Mr. Saban. I admire him very much. I admire him - not as much on his wins as what he gets out of his players.

Nick Saban takes a good player and is capable of making him a great player.

Q: Could Texas get Nick Saban?

MCCOMBS: Oh I don't think there's any question about getting him. When Mack came to Texas, budgets were an issue. Now, hell , all the money that's not at the Vatican is up at UT. If that's a problem, I'm part of the problem.

Agreed, but he seems to be the only Texas based person throwing out anything that could support Saban staying. So I continue to check on what he's saying.

There's far to much smoke for there not to be some kind of fire, I just prefer the reports that it's a trash bag full of leaves and not a nuclear explosion.

I have no idea what's going to happen but I feel like most people in here are Willy Wonka when Augustus Glup gets stuck in the pipe to the fudge room. "The suspense is killing me... I hope it'll last."
