This happens with every coaching change/resignation/hire/fire. They do these things with a certain timeline where kinks get worked out along the way. They like to make it official on their terms.

If the "new coach" wants Mack to coach the bowl game, that is a nice send-off for Mack and allows the "new coach" to spend all his time recruiting and not worrying about the game prep. It's smart.
