re: Mack Brown looking to sign until 2020

It's good for the rest of the country as long as he's at Texas.

Before the season, the plan was for Mack's last season to be the 2014 season. The feeling is that UT will be national title contenders in 2014, and Mack will be able to go out on a good note. He would replace Deloss Dodds as AD.

Of course, that plan included Urban Meyer taking over as coach if he was available. Obviously, that won't happen now.

There has also been rumblings about UT going after Saban with really big money, but it seems unlikely that Saban will leave Bama.

So, where does that leave UT now? Obviously, they are trying hard to find a successor to Mack. The timing could be thrown a wrench if Mack has another mediocre year. Mack wants to leave coaching on a high note, especially if he plans to stay at UT in the AD role.

If it appears that UT is going to have a decent season next year, look for the Mack Brown Retirement rumors to become very strong.

The question is: Who are the coaches in their cross-hairs? Peterson at Boise State has to be in the top 5. TCU's Patterson will get a look, as will Art Briles, but I wonder if UT would pluck someone from a fellow conference member.

It obviously depends on they're current coaches staying put, but I would expect Texas to promote from within before taking a coach from a University in the same conference.

If the defense keeps getting better, Manny Diaz would be a possibility. I wouldn't count out Bryan Harsin, either.
