Louisiana, Les, Leach, and the Air Raid Offense

One popular variant of the spread is the "Air Raid" offense (pioneered by Hal Mumme), in which the offense may pass on over 80% of its downs. The offense is seen as being complex, though receivers need to know relatively few routes. The complexity comes from the different formations the routes are run out of. The running back in the Air Raid offense serves a useful role as well by catching passes out of the backfield, on screens, and carrying the ball on draw plays.
I can't see how Mike Leach can be a fit with what Les Miles is doing with recruiting and the kind of talent LA provides. LSU's stable of young runningbacks are the envy of most run-heavy teams in the country to go along with road-grader type o-linemen coming in. LSU's offense is better suited going into a run-heavy I-formation type rather than a zone blocking scheme with mostly passing plays. How about a state that tends to produce a large number of blue chip runningbacks? Will these kids get the urge to leave in search of a place where they can get more carries?
How does Mike Leach fit with LSU? If there is a chance he comes on board, will his philosophy change?

I sat in awe as Hal Mumme's air raid run by Tim Couch picked us apart in Tiger Stadium. It was quite a display if I recall.

Every offense picked us apart that year. The next time he brought a team to Tiger Stadium he got shut out.

Perfect example of why NFL teams didn't buy into Graham Harrell's gaudy stats.

at first glance, it looks like he doesn't. kinda interesting that BelowPar said that Les was even kicking around the idea.

I'd imagine it'd have to. I don't think Les is as stuck on running the ball as a lotta ppl, but I can't see him wanting to pass that much. be interesting to see what kinda balance they could strike.

If LSU's offense resembles anything close to what Texas Tech use to run, say bye bye to every runningback on the roster not named Ford or Gore. 80% chance Fournette joins Reed and GRob at Auburn.

Let's say ML becomes our OC. Are you to believe he does not know about the talent riches of the RB position in the state of La? He personally recruited some of these guys to Texas Tech. He is a well educated man(lawyer). He would have to choice but to adapt his system with the talented players in the state. He was Kentucky's and Oklahoma's OC before HC at Texas Tech. He was a pure Air Raid at Tt because he had to because of his recruiting handcuffs. Some offense also run the Air Raid that don't throw it 80%, some only throw it 35% or 45%. He is an offense guru. He would adapt his system to fit into a bigger mix of offensive talent. To say he wouldn't work while we still have "round peg into square hole" Crowton just makes me laugh!!

I sincerely doubt that it would. I think Les and Leach could make it work.

Thank you. leach used the style of offense at TT because that is all he had to work with.

When Leach was coach at Tt he came here looking at our 3* kids that were boarderline at best LSU players. He did this everywhere. He went into fertile recruiting areas knowing the 5* were going to LSU, Ala, Texas, ND, and USC. So he sold the come be my 5* at Tech to 2 and 3* talent and he had great offenses. He could not get the talent at every offensive position to handle the big boys every week. So as an intelligent coach he went to an offensive style that fit his recruits. Leach would adapt and do the same here, but guess what, now he has the school to recruit the 5* caliber guys that scares me. Now he could fully implement the offense of his choice due to lack of player limitations.

I would love to see him come if he does just that. I don't know his history beyond Texas Tech. I was too young to remember how he did as OC at UK and OU.

Another question I have is why the bigger programs never offered him a job? Was he that awful on defensive decisions that the big names won't touch him?

Offensive scheme
Leach is known for building some very potent offenses, directing very prolific passing-oriented teams that have broken school and NCAA records at Valdosta State and Kentucky where he was offensive coordinator under Hal Mumme, developing their (in)famous "Air Raid Offense",[10] at Oklahoma under head coach Bob Stoops,[11] and Texas Tech, where he became head coach in 2000. Leach's spread offense relies heavily on passing and he has seen several of his quarterbacks post NCAA records. At Kentucky he tutored prospect Tim Couch into a No. 1 NFL draft pick. At Oklahoma, Josh Heupel became an NFL draft pick following a year under Leach's tutelage.

quirky guy, and I think he was content at Tech.

I know this is apples and oranges but Sonny Dykes, a Leach deciple, is now coaching at TECH. When he got there he was dead set on slinging it all over thie field. TECH does not have the quarterback to make the system work and halfway through the season Dykes really changed the offese to utilize the run first players Dooley recruited to TECH. Dykes kept a lot of the pass happy formations but based everything around the run FIRST. The air raid systyem can adapt to the talent available to a coach. I think Leach would make it work at LSU and it would be damn scarry to watch.

Until the James incident, he was content at Tt. Look at the winning he did their. I think people questioned his defensive coor hirings. At Tt he was limited in recruiting defensive guys. His starters were like 3rd string on Texas and OU. It is tough to get good defensive players their. Especially since they were an offensive minded school.
The only limitation i think his possible hiring would be LSU's game preparation. If he would adapt like i said we would be alrite, but if he went pure passing air-raid 80% our defense would struggle i think in preparation due to lack of reps to prepare for the Mark Ingrahm and M Lattimore's of the world.

I dunno about that. The admin was all butt-hurt when he demanded respectable Big-12 HC pay after all those winning seasons and an 11-win season to go along with the BCS game that brought them a lot of money and national attention. They held the grudge and sided with some spoiled rich kid rather than their winningest head coach in terms of percentage.
