Let's take a look back at the Dabo Swinney hire...

This article written in January of this year seems relevant. LINK
In the article, they pull Pat Forde's assessment of the hire in 2008, which aligned with just about every other fan and media member:
And how about some PATIENCE, and maybe some Chad Morris?
Hiring football coaches is such a crap shoot.
In the article, they pull Pat Forde's assessment of the hire in 2008, which aligned with just about every other fan and media member:

Swinney was part and parcel of a failed season, but somehow got a promotion out of the deal. Who knew that beating Duke and Virginia could lead to such ample rewards? Clemson fans loved the fact that the Tigers closed the regular season by beating rival South Carolina. But hey, Bowden beat the Gamecocks seven times in nine tries and look where that got him. Swinney has the same thing going for him that Sarkisian has at Washington: the in-conference competition in the ACC isn't that stiff.

The point of letting you know that, in 2008, ESPN gave Clemson's hiring of Dabo Swinney a D+ is not to shame ESPN or Pat Forde. After all, few people not named Dabo Swinney or Terry Don Phillips, the ex-Clemson A.D. Swinney name-checked in the post-game ceremony, thought Swinney had a snowball's chance in Hell of being the person to finally get the Tigers back to the promised land.
But Swinney did just that, so we are required by Online Law to dig this up and show it to you.
And how about some PATIENCE, and maybe some Chad Morris?
quote:
Swinney went 19-15 in his first two-and-a-half seasons with Clemson, and it looked like Forde and all of the other critics might have been right. But since Swinney hired Chad Morris to revamp his offense in 2011, the Tigers are 70-13 with three ACC titles and a national championship.
Hiring football coaches is such a crap shoot.

Orgeron at LSU could be a similar experience.

It is shocking how much the Orgeron hire parallels the Dabo hire. There are so many mistakes that an AD can make with the hire. One can be making the comfortable hire (Dabo worked, maybe Orgeron will work). The other mistake can be making the splash hire that will excite the fans without actually considering if the hire will work long term (I fully believe this would be Gruden if he is ever actually hired).

To add some context. Dabo was the far and away the front runner for the job.
The previous coach, Tommy Bowden, was fired midway through the season. Dabo was made the interim coach, and ultimately got the permanent job.
At the end of the previous season, Jeff Long, who was Bowden's friend, tried to hire Tommy away to Arkansas. Clemson was able to prevent Bowden from leaving through a raise and new buyout. However, if Bowden had left, Dabo would have been the choice for the job.
So yes, instead of taking a million dollar buyout from Arkansas for hiring Bowden, Clemson instead was dumb enough to pay Bowden a three million dollar buyout for six more games.
The other big difference, and I really can't stress the importance of this, is that Dabo is working under a football friendly administration.
Dating back to the Danny Ford days, Clemson's administration viewed athletics and academics as mortal enemies. That's changed and has made it possible for Dabo to do what he's done.

Other than both were interims and tradiotnally position coaches that is where the comparison ends.
Swinney has no true head coaching experience. Orgeron was an epic failure at Ole Miss. so no, they don’t mirror each other almost perfectly as some of you love to claim.
