The strong rumor that has come out today is that Lane Kiffin will indeed be named the Vols' new head coach, probably within 2 or 3 weeks. Many are confident he will bring Ed Orgeron with him, probably as DC or maybe as a recruiting coordinator.

I have mixed feelings on this. While I would be ecstatic to have Orgeron anywhere on our staff (save the HC position, for obvious reasons) I'll have to be in a wait-and-see type of mode with Kiffin, as I don't think he's proven enough for a job like Tennessee.

It is what it is. Nothing is final yet, but I have felt for a while like Kiffin would be the one. Kelly remains a strong possibility in my mind.

bad hire if true. Tennessee needs a proven winner with college head coaching experience. The jury is still out on whether Kiffen would be a good head coach or not.

wow that sucks for UT. I was just praying someone would hire him so PC wouldn't get any ideas about rehiring Kiffin

I only MIGHT hire lane if he could bring his dad as the DC.
I'd rather hire Monte with Lane as the OC

Kiffin CAN recruit, but of course he was doing that in Southern California, so I'm not sure how well it would transfer to Knoxville.

Coach O, on the other hand, is a monster recruiter and has tons of energy. I would be elated to have him on our staff.

the biggest problem with UTenn recently is talent

well, and a horrible OC hire

this hiring fixes both

Yes, and UT is losing the recruiting battle with kids that they were stealing from other states. With Miles in La, Orgeron (was) in Oxford, Saban in Tuscaloosa, Meyer in Fla, Richt in Ga, and now Butch Davis in NC, Fulmer wasn't able to go and rob top talent from neighboring states. Tenn HS football talent pool is very thin.

I don't think it is a horrible hire by any means. If Kiffin would have stayed at USC with that programs success than his name would be as hot as any of these big time assistants getting looks right now, especially with his pedigree and family connections.

He took a gamble, got into a horrible situation, and now is starting from scratch. A young, energetic coaching staff that can recruit their asses off is just what Tenn needs.

I guess "gamble" was a bad choice of words. He took a step to further himself (the best opportunity he had at the time), and got into a rough situation with Oakland.
