Fuente went to BFE Virginia as a guy who cannot recruit. You gotta recruit at VT.

Also his wife is a huge bitch, so at least he has that going for him.

UNC has been moving in there with Dre Bly. They also need a coach who will recruit three stars from Virginia and not three stars from Texas.

There are tons of “remote” locations in college football
I never understand this one at all. Kids don’t go to schools because of a “big city”
Except VT is really out in the middle of nowhere from their fanbase and recruiting. UNC, NC State, Duke, Wake, UVA and Maryland are all closer to Norfolk than Blacksburg. NC State, Duke, WVU, UVA, Maryland, Pedo State and Rutgers are all closer to DC and UNC is only 15 minutes more. Its incredible how well Beamer was able to recruit there.

I don't think the location of Blacksburg helps to make VT a top destination program.

Neither does SouthBend or Auburn, or Norman

Auburn and Norman are both 90-200 miles from some of the best recruiting grounds in the nation.

Notre Dame is not. These shouldn't even be comparable. ND is a small, freezing cold Catholic school in the middle of nowhere. They should be recruting equivalent to Nebraska or Purdue, but they don't. They typically bring in top 8-12 type classes, even when Charlie and Tye Willingham were there.

It's actually quite remarkable how well they do despite their Geographic limitations.

Virginia Tech and Beamer, on the other hand, used to own the VA Tidewater/Norfolk area in recruiting. That's where Michael Vick came from and Beamer was on that region before the other schools like Alabama and Ohio State, Clemson, and other powers started raiding it when VA Tech declined.

Can someone bring back VA Tech recruiting? Yeah, absolutely, but none of the teenagers today remember anything about the glory days of the VA Tech in the 90s and early 00s.

Agreed
But i don’t think this has anything to do with where they are, and more with who they are and who’s coaching them.
It’s a college town like every other school in the conference

I knew Fuente was was bad recruiter, but I had no idea how much he killed VA Tech as a program in just a few years.

Vatech is gonna take some rebuild elbow grease. Inherited a top 25 recruiter left it in the mid 40 with a bottom 25 offense. That doesn't turn fast. Patience VT fans, Patience

His gigantic buyout is why the VA Tech admin didn't fire him sooner, but, by holding onto him for this extra couple of years, he probably did more damage to the program than had they just bit the bullet and fired him early.

There's an addahe that however long it took a program to decline, that's how long it will take to rebuild it. That's obviously not the case everywhere, but VA Tech is going to be tough to get back to where they were just 10 years ago.
