Actually, he did both of these things in the 2 months before the Michigan job came open in 2007...

All this has happened since Les Miles officially pulled his name out of the 2007 Michigan coaching search...

- won a SEC Title
- won a National Championship
- stayed at the helm of a top program with his recruits, put his stamp on the program
- beat Urban Meyer
- beat Nick Saban
- beat Bobby Petrino
- qualified for two more New Year's Day bowls (in the traditional sense)

Les Miles had done none of those things the last time the job was open

The SEC Title came mere hours after he pulled his name from the Michigan coaching search, and the national title came a month later. Since that championship game in January of 2008, Les has not won an important game. I could sit here and write about the losses to Urban Meyer, to Saban, to Petrino, to Nutt...about Ole Miss and Doley's debacle and Arkansas 2010 and all of the tough arse games that went to the wire (or farther than it should) against subpar competition. But what matters most is that Les hasn't won anything important...hasn't even gotten us into an important game since we slipped into the national championship game by virtue of a series of events less likely than another Ronnie Prude safety violation flag. No SEC championship games. No National Championship games. No BCS bowls. Hell, you can make the case that the Alabama game this year was the most important win Miles has ever had at the school.

Hoke has more baggage. I hope and pray Les does not go but whoever we get will be a better coach than Kiffy
I would love to have Brady Hoke at USC, but I am not sure Miles is a better coach than Kiffin TBH.

Serious question.

What has Kiffin done to be considered better than Miles?

(I understand that you follow the Trojans and are somewhat biased)

Honestly, the ury is still out on Kiffin. The table set by Pete Carroll at USC was not as neatly set as the one Les Miles inherited from Saban, to say the least. I will evaluate him largely on how he guides USC through the minefield of NCAA sanctions.

It seems that Miles,on the other hand, often wins in spite of his coaching ability rather than because of it, and at times his lack of attention to detail is downright embarrassing.

You don't win 11 games 4 out of 6 seasons without an attention to detail, esp in the SEC.

4th ranked Alabama, Nov. 2010.

How short some people's memories are.

Your analysis sucks. No matter how many times negatigers get corrected and no matter how many games miles wins, you are still obstinate about the whatever minor flaws miles has.

EVERY game is important. No game is a guaranteed win. Espn noted last night that miles has only lost one game to non conference team in six years. While you might think he hasn't won anything important, he has kept us in the upper third of the toughest conference. That is VERY respectable.

You mentioned the games that weren't pretty. How about bama '09. Lsu was beating them in the 4th quarter on the road and ended competitively. Why didn't you mention that?

The bottom line is this, you are expecting miles to do something that even the "best" coaches in America have trouble doing. The only thing miles hasn't accomplished is to dominate the best conference in America. Even if he did, people would then say it's not the best conference.

Just my opinion, RRTiger, but I think the success Miles has enjoyed while wearing the Hat is largely due to the quality of the Defensive Coordinators that worked for him. Pelini and Chavis are outstanding DC's.

Malveto, not so much. See the correlation?
