Do you work for LSU, Belowpar? I'm not questioning your story (I've thought it was Chavis for a while). I'm just merely curious.

(I realize that if you're a "leak" you can't out yourself. But I figured you've gotta be connected to the higher-ups somehow.)

Yeah, he's got to start packing for Dallas.

The poor defensive numbers during the 3 years you cling to no more guarantee "mediocrity" than do the 2 recent years of lofty success. And this includes what I believe is a Top 10 finish this year.

so 50/50 shot that we could have shitty defenses 60% of the time

generally superb is used very loosely there

Chavis having similar success at LSU far more probable than not. Without cherry-picking the stats, I don't see how another conclusion could be reached.

I dont see any other conclusion besides above average. He's not a terrible hire, but like i said this is Miles' lifetime contract guarantee hire. Who cares if we never win the SEC or NC again, as long as we go to the Cotton Bowl every year!!! yah!!

Given the overall talent on both sides of the ball, and the demonstrated ability to replace the talent year-in and year-out. LSU needed to identify the best available DC's and sign the least risky one. If this information is true, I believe that is what has been done.

Excellent Hire IMHO..........

Now Coach Orgeron woould be a good addition, but is not NEEDED in any way. LSU has demonstrated the ability to recruit without Orgeron. Chavis has demonstrated the ability to coach without him. Orgeron is Lagniappe.

That being said, everyone does like a little Lagniappe.

i don't like his struggles with the spread and quite frankly the inability of UT to adapt to the changing college football world is what killed the fulmer reign. how much of that is shouldered by chavis, i am not sure, but i am not all excited about this

Yeah, Chavis and Tennessee really struggled with the spread this season. Florida had a grand total of 240 yards on offense.

lets not forget coaching at lsu>>tennessee.

We are a powerhouse now, with a state all to ourselves, I mean if we can take coaches like saban, and miles, muschamp, pelini and make them household names i have no doubt that he will do very well here.

Agreed. I cannot understand this. UT held UF to their LOWEST offensive production of the year.

You couldn't possibly miss my larger point by a larger distance than you already have.

Of course there is credible criticism of Miles, MalVeto tops among them. He blew up nearly his entire reserve of goodwill with that disastrous decision, despite being a year removed from the MNC. And if LSU doesn't go 10-2 regardless of SECCG, or 9-3 with an SECCG appearance, I'll be right there next to you with a torch and pitchfork calling for his ouster. I don't pay what I pay for season tickets to watch LSU get punched in the mouth by the likes of Ole Miss, I assure you.

Miles is neither infalliable nor retarded. He's Mack Brown with a better OC, and a worse haircut. So don't look at Miles as infalliable or retarded. Give him credit when he makes a very nice DC hire. Hammer his arse when he makes an abysmal one, like last time. Either way, care enough about LSU football to think about what you post for 2 seconds before you submit it.

I already knew no one on Tigerdroppings would be happy once this was announced but man we sure are a hard group to please.

It's true that many would not be happy, regardless of who was hired. However, I'm pleased we got a stable, experience, successful, proven, SEC-caliber Defensive Coordinator. There is nothing sensational, or "exciting" about this hire, nor was that a requirement. With our overall talent, the quality of players, facilities, offensive coordinator, recruiting level, and other factors, there is no reason why we shouldn't go 4 or 5 years winning 9-11 games every season.

Because the home-away schedule tips in our favor for 2009, we should challenge for the SEC West.

Well Stated. This is not meant (by me) to slight Max but more people should heed the direction of the final sentence.

Old coaches can't win???

Not at LSU. Mac was "retired" at 56. He was "too old". LSU has had more success with younger coaches, guys in their mid-30s to mid-40s, like Archer and Hallman.

I agree that this DC hire either saves Miles' $3 million+ job, or scuttles it. Isn't that all the more reason to go with proven Chavis over boom/bust Walker? Keep in mind I thought this mitigated in favor of Koenning first. And I'd have preferred Walker over Chavis. But asserting that this hire guarantees a lifetime contract doesn't really support hiring Walker, or a guy everyone passed on like Tenuta, over Chavis.

You've made about 4 logical jumps from "LSU hires Chavis, who has both SEC and MNC rings within the past decade" to "LSU hires Chavis, who guarantees that LSU will never win the SEC or MNC ever again." I'm not sure I follow.

Miles is actually quite bright. And his successes here so far outweigh his failures as to render the kind of post you're responding to utterly pathetic. When I read that kind of post, I am reminded of the one or two complete morons who sit within hearing distince of my seats at Tiger Stadium. If every offensive play isn't a TD, and if every defensive play isn't a sack or a turnover, they are vocally livid, cursing the coaching staff and the players with every ounce of emotion they can summon up. The big difference between this board and sitting in front of them at TS, insofar as their "contributions" are concerned, is that at least here they can be ignored easily.
