ISU is so historically bad that Gene won 2 games and then 3 games.. it was so impressive that they gave him the Auburn job.
What Matt has done is nothing short of a miracle.

Matt Campbell is a good coach and he could probably help recruit the Midwest for some Offensive line that we desperately need

I've watched some interviews of him...he is impressive in my opinion

If we hire him, in 5 years I think it'll be obvious he was the better hire than Riley
I don’t see him winning over recruits anytime soon

For the money LSU is tossing around and the big buyout they gave O...hell yes I'm opposed. He does nothing for us. This is a hire you make when everyone else tells you no or you're in desperation.
Is he a terrible coach? Absolutely not. But he's not going to do anything for this university for this recruiting class, the near future, and he certainly isn't going to excite the fanbase. His personality probably would not jive well with this fanbase either. I don't get how this guy's name is floated so much. He seems like a poor fit to me.
If we want to settle for mediocrity sure. We'll be an average team every year. We gun for championships here and we have a blank check. You buy O out for that kind of money and have a blank check then you decide to hire Campbell? You're going to have a pissed off fanbase and the boosters are going to chop Woody's head off.

why not? I think he would do pretty good in recruiting. Hard to hold what he did in recruiting at Iowa St. against him. It is Iowa St after all.

I'm not saying I would think we'll be languishing for 5 years.
I'd have the same expectations with Campbell as I would any coach, which is be in contention to win the SEC West every year. And I think Campbell would turn us around fairly quickly.
My point was more that Riley would have provided a bigger, immediate spark to the program and an instant boost to recruiting. While hiring Campbell would be met with much more subdued response. Riley would probably have brought some highly regarded recruits and possibly transfers with him. Campbell, not so much.
But if there were alternate universe and in one we hired Riley and hired Campbell in the other, the program would be in better shape 5 years down the road in the Campbell universe.

The only reason people have expectations for ISU is because of Matt Campbell.
Every game he has no room for error.
I don’t think he gets hired, but Matt is heck of a coach.
