Iowa State is not the graveyard you think

This is the record from 2000-2006 for Iowa State under Dan McCarney. He hasn't been hailed as one of the top coaches in CFB. (2-10 year in 2003 they had a RS Freshmen QB)
Gene Chizik went 3-9, 2-10. Absolutely terrible in the Big 12 North, which is very weak.
Auburn should have hired Dan McCarney before they hired Chizik.

Did you consider the fact that although the North isnt as strong as the South, the Big 12 did get more competitive from 2003 to 2008?

They sure had enough resources to compete for the Big 12 North title two straight years (2004-2005). They just needed to win their last game both years but lost in heartbreakers.
Chizik couldn't get bowl elgible if you added the win totals for both of his seasons that followed the ISU successful years.

They played in the Eddie Robinson classic vs. Florida St. to start the year. That gave them the extra game.

yeah back around 2003 teams could play a ton of games
i think the years sproles went over 2k, KSU played in 15 games (b/c of the big12 title game and their bowl game)

Did you happen to see the first two-year records of some very good coaches in ISU's past? Not good.
McCarney's last four years as the Big12 North was passing up ISU. Do some more research and please let me know how McCarney left the program. Did he go the JuCo route to get recruits in his last few years? Was there lots of attrition in the program in the transition to Chizics tenure? Like Apex said, there might be a lot more to this than just W/L #'s.
Other than KSU pre 1990's, ISU is the epitome of graveyard program in the Big8/Big12. You know, the team that you used to see on the score ticker getting blasted by a score like 63-3 when playing Nebraska and OU. It was them and KSU.

But the point is that Chizik was not able to show improvement whatsoever in his second year at the program. It can be argued that they got worse.
Consider: In 2000, Oklahoma State was 3-8 under Bob Simmons. In 2001, Les Miles took over and went 4-7. In 2002, Oklahoma State went 8-5.
That's showing improvement. At a school that has traditionally struggled in football.
