I just don't see that "splash" hire happening this offseason for any SEC program

KY did about as good as they can do and should be pleased but TENN, AU & ARK i just don't see getting that "wow" hire. They might not need to; not all "wow" hires end up working out and some that aren't end up being great.
Who's on the list for Ark, Tenn, & AU that would really impress?

Outside of Saban who was the last "wow" hire made in the SEC? Spurrier at SC?
Miles certainly wasn't a wow hire.

I don't see Strong being that big of a hire; i put him in the Dooley category (not saying results wise; i'm saying perception of hire)
Peterson has potential but Boise State HCs haven't translated very well to the next level.
Patterson is probably the best available and even he isn't all that exciting.
Petrino was a wow hire so was Saban and CUM for ohio state. This year seems like a light crop of available coaches.

I think there will be 2 really good hires and one maybe up-and-comer. Like it or not, the SEC is about to get tougher and much less top heavy.

quote:agreed that's why i put that qualifier in the OP. Miles was a very meh hire that ended up being way better than anyone predicted; i wasn't even sure who he was
Miles certainly wasn't a wow hire.
A guy like Strong could end up being a great hire but not a real headline grabber when hired IMO.

quote:how so? when Dooley was hired he was a up and comer at a lower tier school that was from the Saban coaching tree. Considered a good hire for UT at the time.

quote:He had a bad record at La Tech and never had a winning season. Dooley was on the Shula level of hires. Strong would be perceived as a far superior hire. He wouldn't be on the Saban/Spurrier/Patterson/etc level, but hell, Houston Nutt at Ole Miss was considered a better hire than Dooley.

I just posted a thread on the Rant saying basically the same thing. I just don't see it happening this year, and that's not necessarily a bad thing for any of the teams searching.
Miles has already been mentioned as an example of an "up and comer" becoming a major score.
Mark Richt is also. Comes out of the assistant ranks to give UGA their best 10-12 year run ever...all he's missing is a N.C. and I think you could easily argue he had a couple of N.C. caliber teams already, with a legit shot at the title this year. (And yet, he's not even "good enough" for many UGA fans.)
If any of the schools looking can score that kind of hire, they will be better off than making the "splash" they hope for.

"wow" hires are overrated. at lsu, neither saban nor miles were wows. curly hallman was more of a wow hire (brett favre). UT is at a damn important juncture; they have had three bad coaches in a row (counting the end of fulmers career) and they need to hire a good recruiter and solid coach. imo, jon gruden would have been one hell of a crap shoot. but certainly a wow guy.
