True. The fans should have never hired Archer or Hallman. We settled. I feel bad about being involved in that.

Lol. Arnsparger and Saban were very well regarded at the time LSU hired them

Arnsparger was an older NFL DC who had never been a head coach and was out of college ball over 20 years.

The reaction to Saban, at the time, was "Who?"

Both are (were) great coaches and great hires, but neither were seen as the top candidates or can't miss head coaches. At least not by the majority of fans.

So what your saying is Miles made LSU a top tier program?

There's an argument to be made that he sustained it for a time, yes. Saban started it, Miles continued it. Think about it, when Miles was hired, would it even have been in the realm of possibilities for LSU to pull Stoops? In the realm of possibilities to pull Carrol? That's essentially what we're talking about when we discuss LSU hiring Fisher. Pulling a top tier coach away from another top tier program. 10 years ago that wasn't even close to a possibility.

Saban - a "didn't Dinardo beat him at Michigan State" hire. He literally put us on the map. Everyone knew and agreed that he was a good hire. We payed dearly for him and got what we paid for.

This is not how I remember the hire. We had beaten his team in a bowl pretty badly like you say. At MSU he went 6–5–1, 6–6, 7–5, 6-6 and finally had a good season with 9-2. He interviewed extremely well so the admins thought he was good. On the outside he looked like a meh hire.

You missed the point. LSU has always had In-stare recruiting. I watched it win championships for other schools in the 90s. Also always had a passionate fan base, always (usually) had competitive facilities, always SAID the money was there, always had the potential to win championships every year.

I misunderstood you post.

It is amazing that you were able to put so much fail into one post.

Hallman - was the up and comer of his day similar to Fleck? But more like Skip Holtzesque to me.

What?

LSU would have been damn lucky to have Skip Holtz instead of Hallman back then.

Arnsparger - actually a pretty decent hire. Brought us back from Stovall (who was a good ol boy hire)

Will not disagree with you on most of thew Arnsparger stuff, bu the swipe at Stovall was not cool. He was brought into an impossible situation after Bo Rein was killed in a plane crash in the middle of recruiting season...I thought he did well

quote:

Archer

That was a dumb hire. The board basically forced him on the Athletic Director at the time and the AD was under fire anyway

quote:

Hallman -

Nationally, thought to be a good hire. I remember a lot of people nationally thought he would make LSU competitive again. A lot of the problems were his fault, but he inherited a bunch of guys that were barely 1AA quality at the time on defense.....that was how bad Archer recruited. Archer made no plans for QB after Hodson left .

quote:

Dinardo - he was a "who the hell is that? Oh the dude that played for Colorado that time" hire

Just so you know, DiNardo played collegiatley at Notre Dame and won a natty and then he was the OC for Bill McCartney when Colorado won a national championship with Darien Hagen and Eric Bienemy and Les Miles as the O-line coach He was an excellent recruiter and a pretty good coach until ....Lou Tepper. I can tell you how he got hired....he was a better choice than the guy they were originally going to hire....Thank Dr. Cusimano on the Board for DiNardo....he probably saved the program.

quote:

Saban

Nobody was expecting Saban when he got hired. Saban did set the ball rolling, but until he broke through in 2003, there were a lot of people who thought he was going to be another meh coach, 8-9 wins a year and overall that was what he did. He averaged 3 losses a year.

quote:

Miles - Stupid hire in '05 and remained so throughout his tenure. The ONLY saving grace was that he had the recruits fooled into liking him, and did manage a championship with Saban's players in spite of his ineptitude. Dumb hire and dumb coach.

All right, that's sour grapes. Yeah 2007 could be said he won with Saban's recruits, but he sustained the program. LSU had been an up and down team throughout much of the program's history...never more than 5 winning seasons in a row until Saban and Miles continued the trend..

At least know something about what you talk about, get some of the facts straight and get some sort of historical perspective

Explain. Seriously. Tell me which of those listed was considered a top tier coach by the fan base at the time they were hired.

depending on your definition of "settled" I know no fans that have done that. I think fisher or herman would be overwhelmingly welcomed by the vast majority of our fanbase. but to say that the fans have "settled" because they know the difficulties in signing a top tier guy is just wrong. it doesn't matter that LSU is a top location; top tier coaches, for the most part, are already at a top location. herman, no but he's getting ready to be and he knows it.

my point, and I (as well as others) have made this a number of times on here, is that the MAJORITY of time a school has to "settle" as their top target(s) turn them down. Saban turned down Texas. RichRod turned down Bama. a deal is a two party agreement; both parties have to WANT to make the change. I can assure you that FSU is going to do everything they can to keep Fisher and ditto for any other top tier guy. other schools can pay just as much as we can.

A lot of that was due to Archer's ineptitude on the recruiting end and a LOT of money being thrown around particularly on the FSU and Miami end .

Archer did not like recruiting New Orleans. The big talent that was winning championships for other schools in the late 80's early 90's were coming out of New Orleans like Jackson at St. Aug ( FSU) Riley at Shaw (Miami). The Joseph Bros at Shaw( Neb and CO ). Manuel at Brother Martin(Michigan), Rod West at Brother Martin ( Notre Dame). Mike Smith at Jesuit (K- State) All of those guys were 5 stars with the exception of Smith (4 stars) coming out of NOLA between 1986 - 1990.

Archer thought that he could win with talent out of Acadiana and East Texas.

Hallman tried to turn around the recruiting trend and to an extent at least stopped the bleeding. He kept Jamie Howard in state and a few others and was able to recruit running backs ( Kevin Franklin from Catholic and Kendall Cleveland out of Texas).

You have no idea the amount of money that FSU and Miami were throwing around in those days as well as Nebraska....they were the ones winning championships as a result.

That's completely false. Maybe in some coaching circles and certainly to Mark Emmert, but he was not a name mentioned by the fans. He was barely over .500 at Michigan State and by no means a slam-dunk hire. Most (many?) fans only knew him as the guy Dinardo beat in the Independence Bowl.

He's the best, but nobody knew that at the time. Revisionist history. Angy revisionist history. And I am sitting. I wasn't when I first posted, but am now. So you have that.

With respect to the stuff about Dinardo, I stand corrected. I knew he had something to do with Colorado. I could have Wikipedia'd it like you did so for that I apologize. I was really drunk in the 90's.

As for the rest of your comments,I would just say "frick You", but instead I'll just say I respectfully disagree.
