Here's a new conspiracy theory for the paranoid

I was part of a conversation this afternoon involving an agent (not involved in this situation) that LSU may be making noises about "doing everything" it can to retain Miles as a smokescreen. To him, it is reminiscent of the situation at UK when Tubby Smith left for Minnesota, which this agent was involved in. Apparently, Kentucky made the obligatory "we want to keep Tubby" comments and spoke vaguely of incentives, because they feared that if they publicly said "Great! Take him!" about their national championship winning coach, it might scare Minnesota off.
I don't know. Interesting parallel, but still...

Sounds plausibe, which means the AD has a fantastic replacement already lined up like Gruden, Cowher or Saban.

The Minnesota athletic department would've had to bury its head in the sand in order to be unaware that people in Kentucky were dissatisfied with Tubby. Minnesota, an obviously inferior program, was just happy to have a former NC coach.

Seems reasonable, but I doubt we would find out if that's the case unless someone very much inside this situation comes out and talks.

I could see Alleva taking the approach that he won't do "anything possible" to keep Miles even though he's publicly stated he will do so. Such a statement strengthens his hand when searching for the next coach. I also suspect he is will on his way to having alternatives lined up.
I don't see this approach having much of an impact on what Michigan does. In other words, if Alleva were to signal that he is not motivated to keep Miles, I don't think it would cause Michigan to back off.

I fall more on the side that Alleva has no idea who he would hire and they will actually throw everything at Les Miles to stay

you are mistaking a conspiracy (against miles) with a strategy involving public relations. our strategy may be to let miles go (and of course, present the right face to the media and public), but i'd bet a bundle our strategy is to keep les miles as our football coach. i think we will bend somewhat on the terms of his contract and ante up a small amount of increase in pay but i doubt if the increased money would be a big factor in coach miles decision. maybe a contract extension will, but i expect michigan will ask miles what it would take to get him and then offer it.
