Not necessarily. Mullen and Spurrier are play-callers.

It is still a CEO position. They just call plays in addition to managing the program.

Without Cam Newton this year would any of you be suggesting Malzahn?
Yes I would

His offense was good without Cam Newton last year fwiw
Yes, it was good. But the stats are skewed IMO. They ran it up on La Tech, Ball State and Furman. 1,770 of total offense combined in those 3 games. Which of course is AWESOME. Then the offense struggles against Kentucky, LSU and Alabama (half of their total yards came on 2 plays). So the offense in 2009 is Somewhere in between of those games.

You can not be serious ? You need to get a clue.

Gus would probably put Randle at QB.

I think with Offensive mastermind types in Mullen, Malzahn, or even Petersen..
Allows for the retaining of Chief to handle the Defensive chores, and all three HCs would be OK with LSU's Ath-Dept/AD heavy-handing them on retaining whatever combination of Frank, Tommy, Billy, Ron, etc..that LSU insists upon.
These are far more attractive options than Pelini, of whom I suspect that a major part of LSU's powers-that-be's infatuation is based in familiarity, and the notion that they can work with him upon which Assistants and Support folks, they want retained moving forward as a program.

I have no doubt Malzahn is a very good OC but again, he hasn't been around college football that long, and not sure asking him to run a top ten program would work all that well. Hell, he may be fantastic but it would be a stretch.

Yet the guy has produced in just 5 years as a college OC the:
- 20th Ranked Offense in America,10 wins and an SEC West Championship and invented the "Wild Cat" at Arkansas in 2006
- #1 Offense in college football in 2007 & 2008 at Tulsa
- 2009: Top 20 Offense with a slap dick QB, 8 wins including a Bowl Win, compared to a 5-7 record and one of worst offense's in America a year prior to his arrival.
- 2010: Top 5 Offense in America, Best Player in America, Heisman Trophy Winner, SEC Championship & on Monday night playing for a National Title.
Am I missing something?

Yep. Carl will push Chavis out as DC and he is the DL coach at Neb, thus Haley could be gone too.

He has only been around college programs for the past five years, and never as a head coach. OC duties are just a tip of what he would do as a head coach. Not all good coordinators are very good when they move up.

Ok and? Is there some unwritten rule that says you're not ready to be a head coach in college football till you've coached in college an X number of years?

Head coaching experience.

You are ignoring my query. What has he done to convince you he is ready to be the CEO of a top ten football team?
A coordinator has much much different duties than a HC.

Tell that to Bob Stoops, Mike Stoops, Bo Pelini, and thousands of other coaches that were OC or DC's or less before their first head coaching opportunity. You have to start some where. We could do a hell of a lot worse than Malzahn that's for sure.
The reason I like Malzahn is because the guy is incredibly successful EVERYWHERE he coaches (including in the SEC) and just wins and wins and wins, combine his talents with a good DC and the LSU name and things at LSU would continue as business as usual.

Well I know the guy personally and I have coached with him and I think he is one of the best offensive minds out there today.
He has integrity, character, is a good recruiter, relates well with the players and his players respect him, he is detailed and leaves no stone unturned, he is a workaholic, and at the end of the day I feel like with all that LSU has to offer he would do just fine here and would be more than able to hire a great staff and would most likely keep a number of coaches already on staff. In my personal opinion he would do great at LSU, period.

The idea of Malzahn is growing more appetizing to me. Tons of coordinators move up to the head job and become very successful.
Here's one: Sean Payton. Never been a head coach before he comes to the Saints and takes them to the NFC Championship Game his FIRST year, right after Katrina. Then, the Super Bowl a few years later - in the NFL.
Dan Mullen was a coordinator just a couple of years ago. Malzahn is 45 years old and knows what he's doing.
He could be a home run hire if we keep Chavis and the defensive staff.

Most were a few more than 5 years removed from a high school program. I am not saying he couldn't be successful, but there is more of a risk with someone who lacks experience than someone with experience.
