Technically speaking there is probably a "buy out" clause in the contract that the Coach, in this case Gus M. would actually OWE the school if he left voluntarily before the term of the contract is up.

However, most of the time the "buy out" is enacted when a school terminates with the coach before the contract expires and thus the school owes the coach.

But, at least on paper, it is set up to keep the coach in from leaving, so it's stated as "if you leave, you (or your new employers) will owe us $XXX ---- if we terminate you, prior to expiration of the contract without "cause", then we owe you $YYY
