my theory now is that UT leaked this awful hire so when they hire someone just slightly less awful it will not seem as bad

Perhaps. Setting things up to name Petrino or Kiffin?
Also possible it was leaked to stir up enough uproar to put an end to Schiano being considered.
Yet it's also pretty hard to fathom that Schiano is truly a serious candidate -- one that would be widely acceptable among UT's administration and power base.
