Schiano is a good coach, but he isn’t Nick Saban. He was never ‘the only choice’ until the school started negotiating with him.
I’m happy they got him, but the process was a disaster.
Pete Thamel wrote a longform piece in SI about Schiano a few years ago about a year after he was fired by Tampa Bay. It's a really good read for anyone interested.
Basically talks in depth about how Schiano spent his 2 years out of coaching visiting numerous coaches and spending time with them to understand what makes a successful program and how to sustain excellence. He spent a lot of time with guys like Saban, Meyer, Belichick, and others as well as visiting several FCS and Div II programs like NDSU to study and document what they do. That can't hurt for a guy who's already been a successful head coach and to reevaluate his methods in effort to get better.

Rutgers grad buddy of mine is so happy he is doing backflips this morning. They are happier than pigs in mud right now up there.
