For all you folks smugly criticizing the Chizik hiring

Not every hire has to be a coach with a record like Vince Lombardi, Bear Bryant or Knute Rockne in order to be an exceptional choice. ADs or GMs who do their homework and find a talent off the radar can be doing a very smart thing. As one case in point, I refer you to the difference between Football God N. Saban at Miami and his successor, Tony Sparano (whose only previous HC gig was at University of New Haven).
Chizik might turn out to be the next dominant coach in the SEC. The Aubies need to back off and take a hard look at what they've got.

I've always liked Chizik. I really thought he would do well at Iowa State.

id hardly call a head coaching job in the big 12 "off the radar". its one thing to give a guy a chance (Sparano), its quite another to give a guy ANOTHER chance, while hes still in the middle of destroying a once decent program. do you realize how bad you have to be to drag Iowa State down to a new low?

Sparano was not Saban's successor. Cam Cameron was. He went 1-15. There have been personnel changes since Saban. There has also been the addition of one Bill Parcells to the front office. So, I am not sure that example works. The point is well taken but I have to ask you this --- how many coaches that have gone 5-19 with a team that was 11-14 in the two years before they arrived have been hired to a more prominent program and gone on to greatness?

I thought he would do better than he had, although he wasn't there very long. How did he recruit while he was there btw?
The Chizik hiring looks like a Smoke Laval hiring to me. Highly thought of assistant sent to small school to get HC experience before taking over a bigger program, but falls flat on face in attempt at small school. I guess time will tell.

Many coordinators succeed as HC once they get a chance. Chizik has been given that chance and failed. It was a bad hire. The AD from AU confused business with personal, as he's been prone to do. This hire will likely cost him his job.

I think its a very risky hire - he won 5 games in two years. The coach before Chizik at Iowa St won 11 games in the two yrs prior.

Smoke actually did very well as head coach at ULM.

He went 241-159 at ULM which is over 60%, but didn't the program not improve that much to the point of people questioning the hire by LSU? That's what I remember, but I could be wrong.

Seems like a pretty shitty hire but i have no doubt Chizik wouldn't have lost more than 11 games at LSU the last 4 years combined.

Bill Belichick failed in his first NFL HC job.

You would think that a guy who is getting a million dollar a yr raise would have won more than 21% of his games.

Auburn didn't need a better coach than Tubberville, but they do need a coach who can recruit as well as Saban. What makes you think Chizik can do better than Tubberville.

Tommy was a great HC, Chizik is a good DC not a great trade. It may work out but right now AU looks pretty dumb.
