I believe it was 1997 and 1998 he was at Clemson.

It was.

1997 - 61st in Scoring and Total.
1998 - 89th in Scoring, 91st in Total.

That was their best quality opponent - by far - and they (the offense) did well.

What am I missing?

That their other opponents were terrible and they were 62nd in offense with seniors in key positions and a weak schedule?

They had a (effectively) 1000 yard rusher, a 2200 yard passer (with almost 2 to 1 TD to INT ratio), they scored 4 TDs on a very good FSU team, and acquitted themselves well in the bowl game with shockingly similar results to our common opponent with them that year, when we had one of our better offenses of the past 25 years.

Now - I think it's clear I'm against the hire. This is 20 year old stuff we're talking about, but my G-d man, if you want to have any credibility on the issue, you have to be fair. They let him go because of 1998, not 1997. I'm trying to explain why 1998 was tougher for him. For 1997, Clemson was a ranked team at the start of the season, and ended up in bowl against Auburn. They hung 47 on South Carolina (@ Columbia) in a big rivalry win, and 28 on FSU in a close loss. They lost all the offensive tools they did that with.
