Or is Chavis bailing cause he sees the end is near for Miles?
Just dumb so dumb

You're right, Chavis' loyalty to Philip Fulmer and his loyalty to Les Miles are comparable.

But the truth is that the only reason Chavis is held in such high regard by some Tiger fans is because he came in on the heels of the co-DC disaster in 2008. Chavis is an adequate DC, . . .
If Chavis leaves, then I would like to see LSU hire a DC with a more aggressive approach and get back to the attacking style of defense we came to enjoy over the past decade.
Well said Leonides.
The farther Malleveto gets in the rear-view mirror and the more we observe less talented defenses outperform ours the more dissatisfied we'll become with Chavis.
To his credit our LB’s were much improved, his D gave us a chance to win every game this year, and there were some gems (GA, UF, AU, and the 1st half against Arky). But for every gem there were some letdowns (MSU, Bama, OM, 2nd half against Arky).
There are better (more aggressive) approaches to D than his (such as TCU, Muschamp, and Saban).

So who is a better option?

At this point I think its real hard to say how good or bad Chavis is at LSU. It is clear that he was better than adequate at UT, but until we can move the ball around better on offense and not play 70-75 snaps/ game on defense who knows. Tough for any coach to prevail in that set of circumstances.
I agree. Statistically the defense improved especially the scoring defense.
My biggest 2 beefs with the defense all year were:
(1)Their inability to get off the field on third downs thus flipping the field position for LSU's offense
(2)Their lack of pressure on 3rd down and long situations either via through their front rush or lack of blitzing
There were far too FEW three and outs by the defense and when the LSU's offense DID get the ball via a punt or turnover; it was usually deep in their own territory. This in itself did not help an offense which struggled all year. The offense had enough problem picking 1 first down a drive much least 2, 3 and 4 to sustain drives into their opponent’s territory.

Replace "Chavis" with "Miles" in your post and you'll be on the right track.
Example:

Miles would be no big loss
But the truth is that the only reason Miles is held in such high regard by some Tiger fans is because he came in on the heels of a BCS Championship and 13-3 SEC record in 2003-2004. Miles is an adequate HC, but not exceptional as his brain is simple and predictable.
WHY why do you have to flame like this? The negatigers are much more obsessed with Miles than any of his defenders. This thread was solely to judge the merits of Chavis but you bring up Miles.
ETA:
To answer the origanal question, I hope Chavis stays just for stability if nothing else. This year we saw a defense that put us in the position to win games. Which is good. I think there are other DCs out there where a defense can take over and win a game for a team which Chavis may have had flashes-UGA and Arky 1st half but didnt do on a consistant basis. The problem is there is no guarantee we could get one of those DCs. If he leaves then we have an oppurtunity to get one but that is a bridge Id rather not cross right now.

A lot this is due to Chavis's defense's inability to get off the field on 3rd down. Its not solely because the offense sucked.

I wouldn't be upset if Chavis left. He did better than our Co-Defensive Coordinator disaster, but I really would like to see us get a better DC who likes to get off the field on third down.

doing better than Mallaveto was no miraculous feat. Chavis's defense seemed to hit its stride in the middle part of the season (Auburn/Tulane), then just decided to decline again.
but yes, if the point of getting chavis was to do better than Mallaveto, then i guess it was a scucess.

Miles is good at lowering the tards' expectations. Next year we'll finish 74th in total offense and they'll be screaming about the marked improvement.

That's what I'm saying, he had almost no room for failure. Same on the other side of the field. If we replaced Crowton this year, the OC would almost have to do better than 110th best offense. That doesn't necessarily make them a good coordinator, just means we had a really shitty one before they came along.
