He won't leave VT for the same position

head coach

Seems like he doesn't interview that well, also rumors that he doesn't like recruiting (would kill any chance of a big head coaching job)

Makes you wonder if Foster has some sort of deal with VT when Beamer retires. Coach in waiting without actually announcing it publicly.

Some guys just aren't made to be big time HC's.
Ellis Johnson
Mickey Andrews
Charlie Weiss
Norm Chow
Rick Neiuheissal (sp?)
Lane Kiffin
Ed Orgeron
Cam Cameron

All these corches were spectacular coordinators, but could not cut the mustard as head guys. Some people just cant do it.

Also, if you adamantly wont recruit or are a bad recruiter, you cant be a good HC these days. There are too many good play callers and defensive minds. You must separate yourself from the masses of good corches.

I'd add Chavis to that list. Fantastic DC who obviously doesn't want a head coaching gig.

I think Spurrier tried to get him to USCe a few years back.

Back when UGA hired Grantham, they reportedly tried to make Foster the highest paid DC in college football. He didn't bite. I would guess he'll stick it out to be the HC when Beamer retires.

He did. I think it was the year that BVG became DC then left for the Falcons a few days/weeks later and then Foster turned it down so SC picked up Ellis Johnson.
