Bruce Feldman: Clay Helton buyout with USC more than $20 million

I posted this on the MSB but figured it should be here as well.
Feldman was on the Ryen Russillo pod, and Russillo asked about what he had heard about the decision to retain Helton, and he indicated that the financial implications of making a move were a lot more significant than had been reported, and that his buyout was, in Feldman's words "significantly bigger than $20 million".
That on top of a new AD and new president, plus the realization that there isn't that homerun hire to justify another move, they decided to keep him around.

these ad’s agree to the worst contracts. There is zero reason clay Helton should have this type of buyout.

As I posted in the MSB thread:
His contract has 4 years remaining.
USC is private so they don't have to disclose his salary.
His salary is reportedly 3.8 million for 2018 from the last thing I saw.
He supposed made 3.2 million for the 2017 season.
I suppose he made 4.something this year.
So you're telling me clay Shelton makes $5 million a year for the last 4 years of his contract with a 100% buyout?
Worst contract of all time.

My guess is that is the buyout for him AND his staff. The number thrown around for Luke’s buyout including staff was around 17 mill I believe.

That's reasonable. The "best" job available right now seems to be FSU. But, for a number of reason, that doesn't appear to be a great job. One coach left of a ton of money to fight an uphill battle just to have a winning conf. record. The following coach was awful, despite seemingly having some NFL talent on the team.
So does USC really want to (A) pay a huge buyout and then (B) get in a bidding war for Mike Norvell, Willie Fritz, etc, etc? I doubt it. They are also smart enough to know that if they want someone like Urban Meyer they could still get him next season at a time when it's not so cost prohibitive to fire Helton because he sure as hell isn't going to Arkansas, Ole Miss, etc.
See if Helton can improve with a young QB. If not, you're probably still in a good position to try to make a "big" hire

I would hope the buyout for Helton isn't huge. But if it is, then I agree with you. Understand your negotiating leverage! Helton had none
That's why I hope that even though Orgeron has had a tremendous year, Woodward doesn't pee all over himself and give O a new deal with significant guarantees. There's no big risk of him leaving LSU. By all means load up the incentives, but protect yourself just in case this year was a great anomaly
