I believe he was asked to find other work. I don’t think his stories about his life during the depression was making a connection with recruits anymore.

Grimes had some cool stories though. Did you know he was nearly in a boating accident? He was in England and was about to head back to the states, but lost his cruise tickets in a back alley game of dice. That same party cruise hit an iceberg and sank. After that he went to Austria to visit his pal Franz. They were driving around one day and some dude just up and shot his buddy.

And apparently Grimes’ earlier years were even wilder

Then there was the time he caught the ferry over to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days...so he tied an onion to his belt, which was the style at the time.....
