Maybe, but again, I am sure was a candidate. That is A CANDIDATE. Not the only candidate. But until the advisory committee and the Admin. weighed-in on his candidacy who was to tell him he wasn't going to get the job. And that hadn't happened until after the Tuesday night meeting of Mich advisory committee, the Admin and the AD. Now do you tell Les then he didn't get the job, right before the SEC CG (given his emotional reaction to his possible candidacy), or wait until that is past and then let him down.
Many on this board and on others are convinced that he would crawl to Ann Arbor over broken glass to get the job and that possibility caused him huge distraction and lost LSU a NC shot. What reaction do you think the news that he in not going to get the job would evoke? And do you want that before the SEC CG game?

When a reporter asks a question, there is no requirement to answer. There is no jail for not answering. So why did Miles answer when asked about Mich? And if he was to answer all he had to say was he knew Lloyd, coached with Lloyd and has great respect for his leadership of the Michigan program. But that he is focused solely on Ark, the SEC CG and what ever lies beyond that for LSU and his team. And that he hoped for a chance at the ultimate prize PERIOD!
And that would have made sense, because it is now clear that he had not had any contact from Mich., formal or informal, from anyone in authority to suggest he was a candidate at all.
People do dumb things some times, Miles threw himself under the bus here and dragged LSU, his team and Mich with him. Clearly, it is beyond fixing at this point. The best avenue would seem to press forward and for LSU to do what is best for LSU. For Mich to do what is best for Mich. And for Les to salvage what is best for Les.
God only knows where that will leave everybody.

Michigan doesn't care one way or another about LSU. They want/need a head football coach. While I don't think the institution wishes us any harm, the request for permission to speak to Les could have waited until after the SEC-CG if they did want to concern themselves with our chances in the game.
They are moving in their enlightened self-interest, for which I do not blame them. However, I can see the writing on the wall. IF Les wasn't going to be at Michigan, he would have said so by now, of that I have very little doubt.
But what do I know, I'm a Rantard out here pontificating without accountability.

There's one angle that I haven't seen discussed yet.
What if Michigan doesn't really want Miles? He is the fans #1 choice, clearly, but what if he's not the AD / Faculties choice?
Considering his tremendous fan support, any Michigan hire without at least attempting to get Miles would lead to a serious backlash in AA. Considering that, I'd say it's a possibility (though unlikely) that Miles is being publicly courted to placate the fans.

I think it comes down to money and respect. Miles leaves for Michigan with a 2.5-3 mill guaranteed contract. Shows up at Michigan and they offer 2.0 mill max. Les will feel slighted. I just don't think those Mich SOBS will pay.
I think it pisses Les off and Michigan is then "Dead to him".

Nope. Count me in, too. I think he stays for family reasons.
Although the longer it drags out the harder it is to think so.

Do you people honestly believe that he is going to turn down Michigan without even hearing an offer or having an interview? The guy obviously said enough in his LSU interview that told the AD to put language in his contract making it expensive to head to UM. He's not taking himself out of the running before an offer is made, no matter how highly LSU fans think of themselves and what Les owes to them.
The only way he doesn't go to UM is if he doesn't get an offer.
I didn't say he would not get an offer or wouldn't think about it, I just said my considerable gut tells me he might stay and now that it is filled with a large dose of vodka and New York Strip (medium rare) with a Bleu Cheese wedge salad it is considerably larger therefore it bears more reference.
The gut says he stays.
It also says easy on the tonic and make that a fat two fingers of Stolis.

I think Les finally got the message...his interveiw with Mich was not about the job, but about why he was not getting the job. I will say it again: "There are powerful people at Mich that want the Schembechler era to end!" They love Bo, but this homage has gone on far longer than anything for Yost or Crisler (and they actually won NC's in their eras) and it needs to stop! I suspect even Bo would agree.
I honestly think that only two people at Mich know anything about what is going to happen: Bill Martin and Mary Sue Coleman. They are on the hook for the big ($280 upgrade to the football facilities) fiscal burden Mich football faces going forward. Their jobs are on the line here with the Board of Regents.
I don't think either BM or MSC are hanging around the water-cooler chatting up their process/choices with their staffs. So unless one of them says it or are cited as a source I am positive that it is just more speculation. And if it is a media source, well they have zero access inside Mich, they just can't stand that they are not going to be king-maker at Mich.
Mich has said it hopes to have this done by the end of Dec. (per Bill Martin -- the only reliable source in this). I would expect to hear almost nothing the next few weeks. Then after Mich's bowl game and possibly after the Jan. 1 bowls there will be an announcement. But that is just my opinion.
Who will it be? My money is now on either a really big name (and no I don't have any theories on this) or Chris Petersen from Boise St.

No. I'll eat my share of crow and change my mind about Miles. I think he stays and is a bigger man and better coach than I've given him credit for.
