A choice for the well-sauced: Hal Mumme

No idea why Hal Mumme's name popped in my head today.
If you're not as old as dirt, you may not recall Hal is credited as a founder of the air raid offense. His Kentucky team played LSU 1997-2000, winning 2, losing 2. His peak was probably 1998 when the Wildcats finished 7-5 (4-4), reaching a mid-season rank of #25. Mumme later resigned early 2001 when an NCAA investigation found numerous recruiting violations.
Other than being a perpetual annoyance for our Gerry DiNardo-coached Tigers, Mumme also returned to Louisiana when my alma mater brought back football in 2003 (cancelled in 1985). The scuttlebutt around SLU was that a private donor made a $1M payment/donation/whatever to bring in a high-level coach, and we were convinced this new "air raid guy" was going to restore all of SELU's former football glory. Or something like that.
Hal coached the 2 years of his "deal" with the booster, leaving SELU in 2004 after posting a 12-11 record.
Mumme's star continued to fade over the ensuing years, falling from HC to OC assistant all down through Div. II, and ultimately leading him to as coach of something called "The Spring League North Division in Indianapolis" earlier this year.
Like I said, the story about a booster kicking in the money to bring Hal Mumme to the podunk town of Hammond was just campus gossip as far as I know. Hell, given how far he ultimately fell, it probably wasn't a bad place for him overall. I was wondering if any of you experts recall anything about the Mumme experiment at SELU--other rumors have suggested some things way more significant than just taking the money for a substandard coaching scheme (like Les Miles kind of activity), but his tenure came after I left, so that's not entirely clear.
Oh, and if Jimbo, et al. aren't available, we could probably get Hal to come on down for a few dollars and maybe a couple student workers...

You really had the time to post this novel of bullshite?

If you want an innovative offense, go hire Brennan Marion from Pitt as the OC.
He runs something called the GoGo offense.
Mumme is a mummy at this point.

What’s Marty Mornhinweg up to these days?

What in the actual frick is going on here
The aforesaid old geezer only makes a passing reference to the referenced coach as a potential candidate based upon the sheer lunacy of the notion.

quote:Yeah, I probably put too much thought into that one. Regardless, since it's anchors aweigh for my OP, I'll add that I was just asking a fricking question.
Post is shite.
The Hal Mumme hire was one of the first times I even considered the possibility that coaches could earn 7 figures (allegedly). I've occasionally wondered if there were more to the story of him at SELU.
It's almost like I had a fleeting thought that a board named "Coaching Changes" may be an appropriate venue to ask this board's collective wisdom about a coach's hiring/firing. My mistake--won't happen again.
Oh, one more thing: Did anyone really mistake whatever the frick I asked about HM as a suggestion that he was a valid/viable candidate for LSU? Seriously?

quote:Again, only because the OP is firmly anchored, I just wanted to respond, with all due humbleness and sincerity, that you can kindly GFY.
It’s time for bed Paw Paw
It was a goddamn question about a former Louisiana coach's hiring/firing. Yeah, I probably went overboard with the details, but how/why is a question about a prior Coaching Change in Louisiana worthy of all the animosity?
We figured out yesterday on tOT that my 5 decades is pretty damn close to the board's average age, so y'all remember HM as well as me. I figured someone may have an actual frigging answer or insight.

quote:Yeah, I did. Did you only have time to read the first and last line?

Like I said above, I probably went overboard with the details, but it was a legitimate frigging question about whether anyone in this group of folks had any information about a local coaching change question that has perplexed me for years.
Weird how groupthink reaches an erroneous conclusion of "old geezer refers to Hal Mumme and believes should be hired" from something that said nothing of the sort.
I will concede that the last line--if read in total isolation from the remaining post--could possibly be misconstrued that way. That's an inherent danger of making farcical statements, I guess.
Elsewhere, I believe the post asked a reasonably legitimate question and did so on the correct forum.
Oh, and I'm just shitposting in here for the fun of it. Don't feel like doing more work today, and it feels good.
Also, obviously, the frigging OP is anchored, so I could probably try to porn bomb my way out of here and no one would ever know.

Still frankly befuddled at how anyone could read that question--particularly when preceded by a litany of reasons HM was an awful, terrible coach--and reach the conclusion that Ole FCP was suggesting him as a hire.
I think my mistake was using a subject that was too pithy and mentioned the word "sauce." That, along with the last line's meager attempt at a joke, was apparently all that anyone read. And, frankly, upon giving it a period of reflection, I must now concede that I absolutely should have seen that possibility in the post's first pre-production meeting.
It actually presents a writing phenomenon that I've used to my benefit in the past. Fundamentally, most readers will skip over blocks of text and attempt to ascertain a writing's meaning by focusing on smaller amounts of text that they can easily digest. It's something that comes naturally with a reader's proficiency/skill, and electronic text makes the problem even more pronounced. Since folks will do that, it is possible to put something in writing right under their nose, and they will skim over it if they believe they are picking up the intended meaning from nearby sentences. It always amazed me what I could push right past fellow lawyers back in the day. Form letters were the best: Standard introduction, body, conclusion, and there was always a place to sneak in a waiver of service or some other nonsense, and they'd rarely catch it. The key is to utilize the wonkiest, most arcane vocabulary possible for the "hidden" message and then surround it with low-density, short words. And, no, that's not happening here. It was just an observation that I made upon reflecting that, in fact, I have studied the science of document production/layout, I've contributed to the research in that field, and the error I made was assuming the remainder of the world views writing through the same autistic lens that I use.
Obviously, that is not the case.

quote:Welp, it's time for this rodeo to get on down the highway. Ole FCP has been running hard straight through for somewhere around 40 hours w/o sleep (Sunday morning wakeup, Monday night return). About to go get some rest so that I can make it back up, out, and working in the field by 6AM tomorrow. Just 5 more days, and the my wonderful day of rest/relaxing will be here.

Still posting over here in the anchor.
24 hours later, and I'm still perplexed at how folks were not able to comprehend my question about HM's tenure at Slow Learners U.
I'll get over it. Regardless, what I do know is the following: Astros are straight arse tonight. FODB. #FODB.
And also, "Let's Go Brandon!"
