LotR

It is a bit of its own thing though. Has tons of characters and stories within stories like GoT but is very magic forward. The political systems are in many cases defined by their dealings with magic.

The first one was written with obvious parallels to LotR and the series really comes into its own in the 2nd book. A lot of similarities to GoT as you get further in the series, something called the "Game of Houses" is featured heavily in the middle of the series and is similar to the political plotting and all that in Game of Thrones.

So, is Wheel of Time more like Game of Thrones or The Lord of the Ring?

Definitely more like LOTR but it sort of started the pop fantasy shift into more uncharted territory.

The first book is an admitted ripoff in some ways of Fellowship of the Ring. The author has admitted frequently that he couldn't get it published without it seeming "familiar", at least in terms of narrative.

It definitely branches out greatly to become its own thing, with an absolutely huge, sprawling world that covers like 14 books.

It definitely has some really dark moments, but it never becomes as overtly violent (outside of a few scenes) or sexual as GOT.

For reference, George RR Martin needed blurbs from Robert Jordan in the first 3 GOT books in order to help them sell.

I'm curious to see where they go with all that in the series. There is tons of fighting, we see some torture but a lot of that is sort of magic torture so not as gruesome as GoT. I think you will get more of a horror vibe from a lot of the stuff (at least I hope so) and there is a lot of nudity given how certain races / nations interact, but I hope they don't try and sex it up by throwing random sex scenes in there for no reason.

I’ve always thought it was kind of innocent at times with the way Jordan wrote it, but if you really think about some scenes and how they could portray some stuff on screen, there’s some pretty gratuitous stuff there.

Ya there really is - he just didn't focus on it.

The main characters all coming from a little backwoods village with more puritan thoughts (for lack of a better term) I think skews it. But there is tons of nudity on the page, especially once you get to the Aeil portions of the story. Matt seems to get a round a good bit.

The Golden Globe win will definitely bring a lot of attention to this series for sure. I could see it going absolutely big time with that.

They have to build on this momentum in terms of promotion.

Yep and she really is a great fit for this part - she is a bit over the top but that is exactly the kind of intensity you would want for Moraine.

I think they need to release something with her...a video clip, screenshots, whatever, like...this week. Get some hype.

So they have been doing these "Wheel of Time Wednesday".

And thus far the releases have been:

Something Old - Tam's Sword
Something New - The Guitar
Something Borrowed - Mat's Dagger

And some of the WoT internet people think that we may get Moiraine in full costume (hopefully a clip) for Something Blue

One of the Wheel of Time guys on youtube said that he got passed along some info that audiowork on the trailer is being done in April - so thinks probably will get a full length trailer in May.

I've seen a lot of people nervous because the Covid situation in Prague is apparently worse than what it was when they shutdown the 2nd time.

Really, they just need to suck it up and get on with it.

There's going to be a Moiraine related tease today as everyone expected ("something blue") per Rosamund Pike and WOTonPrime

Its a 3 second video of Moiraine's face and then a flash.

Kind of a nothingburger but at least it is something.

Thom's guitar
Guitar? Thom played harp and flute.

Of course, I never envisioned the heronmark as being embossed in gold rather than simply etched into the steel of the sword, either.

Yeah this was talked about a lot and Rafe the showrunner talked about it a good bit when this came out.

The actor that plays Thom is a musician that is very good with an acoustic guitar. They wanted him to be able to actually do all of the songs himself so they switched it to a guitar.

They also thought that the harp and the flute would just not work on an actual screen for the audiences. The guitar was just a natural fit and in the short clip where they show it it does work.

Also, remember...this is a visual media. Some things are just going to be changed to work better on screen, and that goes for everything from props to plot.

These are changes that are done for practical purposes that do not change the nature of the story or the essence of the characters. While mildly irksome, this true fan is not offended. I remain cautiously optimistic
