Q: What balance are you striking between recreating what's in the books word for word and letting the artists have creativity?

A: What's really important to me is that when we're diverging from the books, that we KNOW we're doing it. So, every piece of production design from shoes to swords to the White Tower itself begins with pages of quotes from the books about that place/thing... The designer then takes it from there to build something that makes sense in our world, with our production concerns, our cast, our aesthetic, etc. But at the end of the day, it all stems from that first document and it's something we can always go back to

Q: Have you filmed any of the preproduction, design, manufacturing of props etc for a behind the scenes program. I have to say I really hope so!

A: Of course! An amazing team has been picking up as much as they can of the process so that after the show's aired you can see all the work and love that went into creating these details large and small :)

Q: Since we are on the topic of swords, what are some of the inspirations for armor design? Is there quite a bit of variation between the Andorran and Shienrnian armor??

A: Yes. Our costume team, lead by the amazing Isis Mussenden, started by building a map of the entire Wheel of Time world, carving out what each nation/culture looked like to make sure they're differentiated (and honoring what's in the books) and then diving back into Two Rivers

Q: How do you decide what needs to be physically made (like the sword) and what's going to be effects?

A: I want things to be as real as possible, so in any place that we possibly can, we've built things instead of trusting to effects. Our show could be all green screen, all CGI, but I think you'll be surprised by how much of it was actually built, and touched and held by our actors

Q: Weapons and their individualistic characteristics are integrals to particular characters, especially with Mat, Rand, and Perrin. Will the show give a similar focus or will the weapons mostly just be *there*

A: You can not even imagine the number of hours that goes into each person's weapon. I was in at least 20 meetings about the dagger that Egwene has, and that's not even a major weapon in the books. There's a whole team of people (and we have a few BIG book fans on the props team)... ... looking at every item held by an actor on the show. I'd be shocked if less than 10,000 woman/man hours were spent on the design and creation of the Heron Mark sword

Q: Will there be different styles of swords and heron marked swords? Or all of them will be in katana style?

A: many, many different styles

Q: Will Moiraine still have a staff at the outset? I know she says it helps her to "focus," but seeing as how she just tossed it aside after it was charred coming out of the Ways and she never replaced it, it doesn't really seem necessary.

A: We're approaching this as an adaptation of the entire series, not just each book individually, so hopefully Season One will feel more like the entire book series of Wheel of Time than it does like Eye of the World. With that in mind -- no Moiraine staff. Let chaos ensue, ha.

Q: How is the set for the Two Rivers designed architecturally? It would seem easy to make it homely and Medieval, but because of it's location and history are there any other inspirations coming into play?

A: When the books came out they felt so blazingly fresh and different and new, so we want that same thing to be true of the show, and if you see us leaning away from certain elements in the books, often times it's because audiences have now seen them before! Unfortunately sometimes even in cases where the book-to-screen adaptations are from books that cribbed it from WoT! ha

Q: The music, how is that related to the show? Did we just get a glimpse of a theme?

A: This is not music from the show itself. When it is, I'll make sure you know it, and it will hopefully feel very uniquely "Wheel of Time" :)

Q: How are the sword forms going to be presented? Is the style going to be pulled from a specific region of sword fighting, or are they going to be spread out over many regions?

A: We have a fight time and swordmaster on the show who has built a fighting style unique to each weapon and culture. So, if you see a Borderlander fight with a heron mark blade it may feel different than a Seanchan. That's merely hypothetical of course ;)

One most noticeable thing about the sword: there is a heron mark on the blade but not the hilt.

While the blade was certainly shaped like a katana, I never envisioned the hilt to be so much like that. The ornamentation of the blade seems to clash with that hilt/wristguard. We'll see how they manage the prophecy.

How shall he be "twice and twice marked" if the heron isn't on the hilt? Does he clutch the blade?

May just dial it down to - he is twice marked or something, there are also SO MANY prophecies that they sort of sift through them and only highlight a handful of them

I imagined an even more basic one in my head, just like some old leather wrappings

Because the hilt in the books isn't rounded like this. They have changed it for the show due to aesthetics.

I just meant I always had it my mind as a farmers sword hilt - old faded leather wrappings, etc.

I don't know if that is accurate with how it was described just how it was in my head.

- oh and now i realized I didn't make the comment you were responding to lol

Glad my memory hasn't failed me. I only read them all in the past year or so.

I never pictured the hilt as a farmer's hilt, really. Its the sword of a Blademaster and the blade is made by the One Power.

Maybe they have him find a second blade, or grasp another's blade whilst fighting them to mark him. Just spit balling because they've already walked into a plot hole.

This is probably my favorite line of things he has said. You can't approach this like an adaptation of book 1. Its an adaptation of the whole series. And there some inconsistencies they can correct between the early and later books in terms of magic and etc.

Also, he mentioned in another comment about hoping the writers room is back for Season 3...indicating that they have finished writing Season 2.

I've been pretty happy with almost everything they seem to be doing - knowing it is an adaptation. Some things will end up being improved with full knowledge of where everyone is going but spending money, lots of real effects, trying to stay true to the intent of the books if not the exact text.

They could just not mention that part of the prophecy in the tv show. Just change it to "Twice he shall be marked, once to live and once to die, etc.".

I can see a long like 12 line prophecy not working as well on TV as a quick 4 or 6 line one anyway.

This could also indicate that they aren't going to lean in as heavily to the Ba'Alzamon dream attacks and that the battle above Falme may play out a lot differently.

If that is the case, I am unsure how I feel about it, they are major players in the early sense and also Rand coming to set and accept Rand's path as the prophecy says (there is so much going on with the Heron as part of his identity in the early books you only fully notice going back and reading).

But i can definitely see how those would be difficult to convey onscreen and also sort of set Rand up as this immediate super powerful figure where they may want to go in more of a slowly finding his way approach. And then the Falme Battle could be more of Matt/ The Horn saving the day and Rand defeat of the Seanchan guy whose name escapes me at a moment.

High Lord Turak

I have long wondered how they will handle Ba'alzamon. It seems like it may not work at all on TV, especially the fact that they all happen from Rand's perspective, they would need to do them from all of the boy's perspectives.

I don't think they will be cut completely though.

I don't think he will get cut either - but he could be merged in a way with Aginor and Balthamel where B'alzamon is sort of the dream menace, but to lesser extent and he gets taken out in that final battle of season 1. Rand then they focus on Great Hunt and Seanchan for Season 2 menace and then have high lord Turak / Seanchan Battle with the Horn / Matt playing a much bigger role there.

I think that would work from a TV perspective will since Rand the battle at the eye and then the Rand / Ba'Alzamon battle would be very similar visually - so focusing on more of an actual grounded battle / matt / the girls sets up a better range in people to root for in the cast.

I feel like Book 3 can befairly condensed - there is potential for Perrin to skip going to Tear and jump-start the Two Rivers siege storyline without having to travel to Tear and back through the ways (especially if we are cutting down on the Faile action). Rand could definitely hit both Tear and season 3 ending in Rhuidean with him emerging but finding out that Couladin has gotten the fake Dragon Marks and is headed out with the Shaido to proclaim himself chief of chiefs as a good, big ending but with a cliffhanger idea.

But that may be too much condensing for one season - just am curious to see where they start combining story lines and skipping stops.

Book 3 is one of the early books that can be mostly condensed. Mat's journey can start in season 2, you can cut a lot of Perrin's journey except for meeting Faile.

Ya and he could even do that in Book 2 / Season 2. It just sort of depends on where they end up in Season 1. I feel like the farthest they would go is the Horn being stolen sort of cliffhanger ending - and I really am starting to think it will be mainly 1 season, maybe some New Spring stuff, expanded Logain, perhaps seeing the Seanchan land at Falme or something to set up Season 2.

The recent leaks about the castle in Spain indicate that they were Logain / Ghealdan scenes.

Indicate that we will be seeing a lot more background into Logain as many have speculated, the director for these scenes is for episodes 3 and 4. Really like the director for these scenes - penny dreadful, enter the badlands.

It’s actually a completely different director just for these scenes I thought with an all Spanish crew.

I think they intended to do these scenes but maybe Covid complicated things.

Logain is the biggest missed opportunity in all of the books. Rafe has said from the beginning that he intended to vastly expand Logan’s character which is a smart choice.

One thing they can do is actually show Logain’s rise and war in Ghealdan. It could provide some serious action, a nice side plot, and misdirection as to who is the DR. And highlight the threat of the Red Ajah, and show a gentling on screen to increase the threat to the EF folk.

And then it gives us a thread to the Black Tower later.

The thing I watched said it was the block 2 director, could be wrong.

I doubt they show the rise and war really, probably just some highlight scenes of him proclaiming himself and a few other things and then getting captured I would assume.

No to my knowledge it is a completely different director and DP. Its basically an all Spanish crew (and almost all Spanish actors) for these Ghealdan scenes.
