So hard to narrow it down to one...but I would probably say The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo. It is a great story of adventure and self actualization...but mostly, it is amazingly written. Coehlo is a heck of a story teller.

Others closely behind:

The Stand - Stephen King
A Soldier of the Great War - Mark Helprin
Dune - Frank Herbert

Definitely one of my favorites; and Winter's Tale as well.

Yeah, Gaiman's reading for that one is really fun.

Most of the books mentioned in this thread are great, but surprised no one has mentioned The Three Body Problem. Just finished the trilogy and thought it was wonderful. Couldn't put it down for 1600 pages. A gripping work full of surprises.

As I sit here with the door open and the cool air coming in, I’ll say it is A Prayer for Owen Meany.

Jurassic Park.

I’m a big Crichton fan, and this was his most enjoyable book in my opinion. Looking at it from today’s perspective with the subsequent commercialization it might not seem like the best choice, but when it first came out it was an amazing read.

My son's 6th grade class is reading it after Fahrenheit 451. I can't count how many time's I've read that book. "Miss Jean Louise, stand up...your father's passin"...I tear up a little every time I read that.
