To Kill A Mockingbird……

I am once again reading “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. I am reminded of the life lesson lessons it conveys to young people.

One of my all time favorites. Still can't bring myself to read Go Set a Watchman though. Don't want the story to change in my mind.

It was initially published as though it were a sequel. It is, in fact, the initial draft of what ended up as To Kill a Mockingbird. From what I understand, her publisher advised her to rewrite the story from the perspective of young Scout rather than the older Scout.

part of it for me too is that Harper Lee never wanted it published. Shewas pretty adamant over the years that TKAM was the only story. From everything I read back when it came out was basically her money hungry family convinced her on her death bed when she didn't know what was going on to sign the rights to release it. If I recall I think they found the notes on it she had stored away in a safety deposit box.

When I was a boy, I noticed that my dad had a drawer in his desk at home that always seemed to have several wristwatches the numbers of which fluctuated over time. We also periodically got deliveries of fresh corn, beans, tomatoes, mangos and melons from different men (black and white). My dad was a lawyer and he accepted these items in lieu of fees that his clients could not pay. He invariably and without exception returned the wristwatches to his clients after a few weeks or months and only accepted them in the first place to make the other man feel like he wasn’t a charity case. We ate the food and always thanked them for it. In the 10th grade, I read To Kill a Mockingbird and saw the film. That’s when I realized my dad was Atticus Finch and when I decided to be a lawyer.

We had to read both in school but that was the only time i read Watchman and don’t remember much. Read Mockingbird every couple years.

To Kill A Mocking Bird was the first novel Ms.Upsprich had us read in Freshmen English class at John Ehret back in the 1980-81 school year.. Great Book

I read Go Set a Watchman and it did change my view of Atticus. It is a shame that it was published given that Lee never wanted it published. Publishing the writing of anyone who did not want it published posthumously is an egregious violation of that person's privacy.
