I just finished The Way of Kings Yesterday. It was highly recommended by my brother in law. I liked the book, but I am not sure I would have finished the 1,200 pages if I did not get it from him. Having said that, I am glad I did. The last 200 pages were really good. I definitely intend to take a break and read 1 or 2 books in between, but I come to the Book Board to ask if the rest of the Stormlight Archive series follows a similar path of a very slow burn leading up to tons of action the last 15% of the book. I intend the read the next book regardless, but it might help my mindset if I know that the remaining books improve on the first, or it could also help to just know what I am getting into.

I intend to ask my BIL as well, but I thought I would get some other opinions as well.

The next two books in the series are truly elite. Books 4 and 5 have some flaws, IMO, but are still worth reading.

Take a break from Roshar right now and read Warbreaker. It's not essential, but several characters from that world show up later in Roshar, and you'll understand things better if you read it before continuing with Words of Radiance

To a certain degree, yes. Its something that is lovingly referred to in the fanbase as a Sanderlanche (Sanderson Avalanche). He does tend to build build build and then there is an avalanche of action in the last 100-200 or so pages.

Books 1 and 2 are probably the best of the series but I like it overall. 4 and 5 are flawed and Sanderson is been kind of open that he realizes that.

If you don't like Way of Kings then I don't know what to tell you, its not going to get "better" in that regard. Lots of world building

I love the Cosmere overall. In order to really understand parts of Books 4 and 5, you probably need to read most of the rest of the Cosmere.

You don't need to, but there are certain reveals that will leave you scratching your head

Better might have been the wrong word to use in the OP. I guess I was wondering if it continues with the slow build to the Sanderlanche. With the way that Way of Kings finished, I think I am ok with this. I just wanted to be prepared.

Yes, most of his books are like this to one degree or another.

If you get into it, after Book 3, there are some reading orders you may want to look at of the rest of the cosmere. Like I said, Stormlight evolves into a bit of a...convergence of the entire Cosmere, and Mistborn/Stormlight get a little bit entangled.

You don't HAVE to read them all, but you may want to

And besides the main five books in the series, there's a novella called Edgedancer that kinda functions as a book 2.5 in the series. It's not essential, but it provides a great deal of character development for a character who becomes increasingly important.

There's also a short book called Dawnshard that's basically book 3.5. Again, not essential, but interesting.

Definitely something that continues throughout. Books 2 and 3 are probably the best books, it falls off a bit in the 4th.

I personally thought the 5th sucked and was a drag to read, but opinions vary on it (though pretty much everyone agrees it's the worst book and a dropoff). It made me not particularly interested in reading the next/last 5 when he writes them unless I hear they end much better.

Sanderson is in bad need of better editing and to be reigned in, and it shows. The last two books of Stormlight had way too many pointless chapters, particularly book 5.

When he's reigned in a bit and writes tighter stuff he can produce great stuff like Warbreaker and the era 2 Mistborn series, but when he's not he produces huge bloat like Stormlight 5.

He's made some off hand comments recently that make it seem like he is pretty self aware about the flaws in book 5 (and 4).

It is a slog for large parts of it.

Yeah it doesn't really slack up until maybe book 5 and even then you're getting a ton of history.

My biggest problem is that Book 5 (the end of the first arc of Stormlight) with cliffhangers for several major characters. That's unfair to readers who've read over 6000 pages. I also disliked getting LGBT ideology forced on me through the gay love story subplot in Book 5.

But it's still a great story, and Roshar is an amazing world. I'll read future Stormlight books if they're ever finished.

Its going to be awhile before he gets back to Roshar (at least 5 years I think), so I hope during this time off from writing about it he figures some things out
