Interesting read.

Definitely an interesting read. But it doesn't add much to the overall scheme of things, if I recall correctly, other than giving some insight into Auri's thoughts.

It kind of read like rothfuss was giving himself a gigantic pat on he back. Unless I just missed some major clues,it seemed a little self indulging and, like you said, didn't really offer anything or move the story forward very much. Still an interesting read, especially if you like auri

I haven't read any of the ancillary stories.

Is it pretty much a forgone conclusion that Kvothe is Meluan Lackless' nephew?

Kvothe mentions that his mom was from a high born family and ran away with his father.

Meluan hates the Ruh because her sister ran off with some Ruh bastard.

Duh doy!

The way I see it Kvothe changed his Name to Kote. Your name is power so by changing his true name he lost his power.

So basically just like 3/4 of Wise Man's Fear then? I was so bored by the Auri short story I didn't finish it. As you said, it really added nothing to the story except for adding more Auri for folks that were huge fans I guess.

I was just about to post asking where y'all were getting the Lackless stuff. I had forgotten Kvothe's mom was highborn. I just read the 2 books in the last few months. So, I guess I'm glad I haven't had to go so long between books as most of you.

How long did it take for you guys to differentiate Sim and Wil? Maybe I just don't focus enough when I read, but they were basically the same person to me for a while. I don't know if it was time passing or Rothfus actually doing a better job in the second book of giving those 2 details to set them apart.

Sim and Wil?

They were always different to me, but I've only ever listened to the Audiobooks. The narrator does a good job and Wil has a strong accent when talking.

Faerie frick Fantasy v. 2.0.

Yeah, 1.0 was awesomely cringe worthy. Completely off the rails, and where I gave up any expectation of Rothfuss finishing the series in any decent way.

And I'm guessing Bast = bastard offspring of 1.0.

And if you spell check "Rothfus" the first thing that comes up is "slothful". Enough said.

I can remember looking ahead in the book to figure out when they hell I was going to get start reading about anything besides the faerie stuff. It was awful.

I read Rothfuss is now blaming Trump being elected as to why he can't finish Book 3.

Even more reason to love Trump. This series is and overhyped windbag. I stopped about 1/4 way through the second book. Rothfuss tries his best Martin impersonation, even down to the half decade between books, and he fails miserably. Martin is a fantastic writer who understands how to move a story even when pages exceed one thousand, whereas Rothfuss takes 30 pages to describe Kvoth hiding from a baby dragon.

I love Rothfuss because he writes so beautifully. I really hate him for being a little nerdy prick about the release of book 3.

All of this. Rothfuss's prose is simply brilliant.

I'm curious to see how it holds up on reread for those who have gone through it a second time. As some said, it's been years since I read the first two, and I genuinely have no clue wtf happened in them (outside of Rothfuss's weird nerd fantasy sex dream coming true).

Kvothe also had lots of sex with his sword teacher.

The one way I justify the Kvothe sex is that this is coming from him. He's a very unreliable narrator and is drastically embellishing every detail to continue to build his legend.

On Martin - no, Dances with Dragons does not move the story along, it bogs it down with uninteresting minor characters that are growing exponentially from book to book. I can't even imagine how many minor characters he will have in the next one, and I really don't care much.

Rothfuss is a an outstanding writer with glaring faults at times. He is showing signs of crashing and burning with this series. And again, I really don't care. Because if he does manage to actually write another one it will take a decade before there is any chance of the next one coming out.

I'm not holding my breath for either author.

Yes. I also think he has her chest that he was shown by her. I think it sits at the foot of his bed, and he can't open it.

I think this too. Bast is his son from the Fairie Realm.

This series has potential, but ending the series with him in the Tavern/Inn would suck. He needs to grow a pair and take Bast out into the world and kick arse.

So I'm not starting another thread on this, but I saw someone mention this on Reddit and I have never heard it before:

Apparently a little ways back, Rothfuss sent out his draft of Book 3 to beta readers.

They all hated it and told him so. And there hasn't been a peep from him since.

If true...yikes. We may never see Doors of Stone.
